uhhhh no you can't port the game from the xbox.

to port a game that would require the source code.

you could make your own games, but they wouldn't run on a normal ps2, just the linux on ps2.

making your game would require a little about linux and the ps2 hardware, but I think you'd probably worry about more about knowing how to program in general.

the linux for ps2 is basically a toy. you can write program,s probably run a web server, browse the internet and htings like that from a ps2, all cool things, but serving very little practicle purpose. You can also probably use your ps2 to view movies (not sure whats been ported yet), or at the very least mp3s. So in that sense it might be neat to use it as a multi media type device.

see I read that the comany called Bleem! used linux to port playstation games to the sega dreamcast.

so i was wondering if i had ever got my hands on the source code for an xbox game, could i port it over if i knew what i was doing.

i also wanted to know if i could make my own soccer game, which you seem to think that i can't. i wondered if i took some linix classes and then tried, if it would be possible.

I'm not saying you can't do it, but you don't need to take any "linux" classes to make a soccer game you need to take a programming class to make a soccer game.

You can be the biggest linux master in the world, but that doesn't mean you can make a soccer game.

hmmm. See I know nothing about programming. I really want to either somehow get mls extratime 2002 onto the PS2 or make my own game. It sounds like either one would be quite a ambitious effort and perhaps out of my capabilities.

the thing is that Konami had made a PS2 version of that game so it must exist somewhere, they just never released it commercially. I think it woul dbe interesting to change a few things about it, like the player names of the International teams.

You really have to think about something, on a modern video game, you're talking about a team of 10-20 people who work probably 2 years to make a video game.

In order for sometone who knows nothing about programmign to make something comparable these days is impossible.

You can make alot of good games, get alot of good concepts down, then hope to join a team, but to make a state of the art game you simply cannot do it your self.

While I understand the desire to play an MLS game, if you can get a mod chip or purchase a japanese ps2, I would suggest getting a copy of Winning Eleven 6, while it doesn't contain the MLS or nearly as many club teams as FIFA, it contains a solid array of the top european clubs, most international sides, and has game play that simply blows everything else out of the water.

ON a side note, if they'd simply port winning eleven/pro evolution soccer (the european version of winning eleven), and throw MLS on top, i'd be in heaven!

I don't know why you even bother answering him. He sounds like a 12 year kid. The linux kit is for people who like to turn their PS2 into a linux box/PC. http://playstation2-linux.com/faq.php#What_is_Linux_for_PS2
I don't know many games if any that made with the linux programming language because it is derivative of unix. If there were games, they are morely text base. Most games today are made in C++ and you have to know ActiveX.
I guess he didn't know that it takes more than one person to develop a game. I am a CS major and believe me, it is hard enough to work write a program by yourself let alone trying to develop a game. You would have to be knowledgeable not only in programming but also the graphics, sounds, and database especially with a sports game.
FYI, he did play WE6 which he said he didn't like because it doesn't have MLS teams.

Ahh a cs major, good luck with that =)

I answered him, because if he is 12 he has alot of time ahead of him, and if he works hard he can get a job at a game developer, and try to work out his dream; it is possible.

There are *some* games made for linux, nothing state of the art; those are all ports (although I hear there wineX (win32/directx emulation basically) allow some good games to run on a linux machine, last I heard warcraft 3 was working.

there isn't a "linux" programming language.

It's not activeX you need to know, it's directX, but you don't have to know it, there is alwasy openGL.

Sorry if I was a bit harsh. If he really wants to develop video games, start learning how to program. Game development especially the graphic part (OpenGL) has taken off in most universities' CS department. But for one person to develop a game, it takes a lot of man hours not to mention a lot of knowledge in different areas. I forgot to mention AI, animations, sounds along with those I have mentioned above. If you really want to see how many people are involved in making a game let say Extra Time for example, look at the credits either in the game or the booklet that came with the book.
