This is a press associated newsfeed off of the FA website concerning the progress of the search.

The search for the next England manager will intensify next week with Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick set to move on to the next stage of finding Steve McClaren's successor.

By next week Barwick will have completed his consultations with 12 leading figures in the game and will sit down with Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development, to decide on their strategy.

It is expected the pair will draw up a small but select group of managers - even perhaps just one or two names - who will be approached to sound out how interested they are in the position. The list of those to be whittled down includes Jose Mourinho, Fabio Capello, Martin O'Neill and Jurgen Klinsmann.

After that, negotiations will focus on a favoured candidate and if talks are successful his name will be presented to the FA board for ratification.

The FA are determined to avoid the sort of beauty parade that caused such widespread dissatisfaction the last time around where a succession of candidates were interviewed, and McClaren was clearly not the first choice to be England manager.

They are emphatic they will not to be bounced in to approaching leading managers such as Mourinho or Capello with a job offer simply because they are popular choices, only to be left in the lurch again as they were with Luis Felipe Scolari in 2006.

Intriguingly, even managers such as O'Neill who have publicly ruled themselves out of contention already may get a call to see if that really is the case.

FA insiders say they would be surprised if McClaren's successor is not installed before the next international - the friendly against Switzerland on February 6 at Wembley.

Officially however, they insist that time is not a factor in the appointment process.

FA chairman Geoff Thompson, speaking at the launch of the 2008 UEFA Cup final design in Manchester, said: "We are determined to get the right man, at the right time. Brian Barwick has been charged with finding a manager to recommend to the FA board and is well under way with the process."

Judging by this information, next week could be a very pivitol week.. Fingers crossed.... Please Barwick, pick the right manager this time...Don't screw this up again..

They're taking their time...

How ironic that when they had time they rushed and when they need to be prompt they dither.

I hope they don't take too long and let the good ones, which are few, get away..

the genius who picked mcClaren.
i can see this being another f'ck up when all the top managers get insulted by being interviewed for the same job by total nuggets.
no doubt barwick will alienate the best coaches.

I have to agree with your line of thinking.....I'm just hoping the idiot picks either Mourinho or Capello, and that he makes them an offer they can't refuse.

Unless they offer a briefcase full of cash ,why the hell would they be convinced by a duffer like barwick?

they are just going to interview everyone..
people like mourinho will get insulted they are interviewed alongside nuggets like O'neil.

The FA couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

When was the last time the FA got a managerial appointment right?

It's a scary thought for sure having Barwick in charge of the proceedings. I'm just hoping that he realizes he's toast if he dosn't get this one right, and goes to Mourinho or Capello on bended knee, offering them the house...

I think Capello does really want it.

I think Capello does really want it.

And the man has been successful everywhere he has been and i have no doubt he would do it again with England.

Capello interviewd (according to the goal.com), Special one is next. I'd love to see that interview. In my head is picture of mourinho choking barwick for pissing him off. Ah, wishful thinking...

goal.com is unreliable.

they should pick mourinho and go for him.
if he backs out then go for capello.
the candidates will get insulted if the FA are interviewing loads of people at once.

As per Skysports.com, it appears that English fluency is no longer a requirement. The article goes on to say that a setup similar to Sven/Steve would be put in place.

Why worry about it. Get Mourinho (he's sor of "fluent") and don't worry about who his ass't is.
