In 2005 the Brazilian championship was going well. Inter was the leader, Fluminense was in second place and in third place was Corinthians.
Corinthians has somewhat of an allstar team but couldnt get to the top of the table. The money behind Corinthians came from MSI a group formed by shady characters from Iran and Russia. They invested in Carlitos Tevez, Mascherano and many other known players.
Meanwhile the leaders Inter had been building a team ground up since 2002 when President Fernando Carvalho took over the club. Carvalho believed that Brazialn Clubs needed to get organized and in 2002 he started the slow process of getting Inter back to its days of Glory.
After a good 2003 and better 2004, Inter in 2005 looked ready to shine. In October of 2005 as the Brazilian Championship was starting to get close to the end (it ends in December) Inter was the leader. Then suddenly a report came out that 1 ref in the Brazilian league may have been corrupt. Quickly and without an in depth investigation the Sports Justice Division in Brazil decided to WIPE out All 11 games the ref had been involved in, including 2 Losses by Corinthians and 1 Win by Inter. Worse, they did this on a Sunday Morning half way through a round and on the Morning of the match up of the year between INTER (leader) and Fluminense(2nd Place). Suddenly at the stroke of a pen, Inter was no longer the leader and now Corinthians found themselves on top of the Table.
This caused revolt around the country. This decision helped Corinthians (a super power in Brazil due to its fan base) while hurting the other clubs all while there was little proof that the ref had effected the results of any of the games. Corinthians was able to replay 2 losses and won 1 and tied the other, winning 4 points it had thought it lost forever. Inter had to replay a previous win of 3x2 over Coritiba and won the replay by the same score 3x2 right at the end of the game.
Corinthians stayed on top of the tabel and Inter stayed close through the next few rounds, when finally both met in Sao Paulo with 3 rounds to go. Inter was down by 1 point. Corinthians opend the scoring 1x0 with Tevez and Inter tied it early in the 2nd. Late in the game Corinthians golie commited a Blatant Penalty coming in strong on a slide on Tinga with his foot high in the air. Tinga went down. All thought it was a clear PK, but the ref called it a dive. Not only did he not give the PK, but gave Tinga RED CARD for a supposed DIVE. Unbelievable. A Score and win would have placed Inter up by 2 points with 2 rounds to go. The Game ended 1x1. Before leaving the Stadium the ref admited he was wrong in the call.
2 weeks later the Championship ended and Corinthians was the Champs by 1 point. Without the 11 canceled games, INTER would have been crowned the Champions. Inter considered itself the Champs as did the rest of Brazil, but the trohie went to the Russian Mafia run Corinthians. The Ref that supposedly messed with the 11 games, still today is a free man and nothing was ever proven further.
Inter tried to take it to the coursts but CBF and Comnebol played hardball and threatened to not let Inter play the Libertadores if they insisted on persuing its rights about the 2005 Championship. Inter was forced to drop the charges in order to play the Libertadores.Inter President Fernando Carvalho said one thing about the whole thing. "A BOLA PUNE" meaning "THE BALL PUNISHES...just give it time". I
In 2006 Corinthians and MSI started falling apart and were eliminated early on in the Libertadores and Inter went on to Win the 2006 Libertadores for the first time and then in December of 2006 Inter went on to win the World Championship in Japan by defeating Barcelona 1x0. JUSTICE PARTIALLY SERVED!
In 2007 Phone recordings were released of President Dualib of Corinthians under investigation by Federal Police of him stating "We only won in 2005 because Inter was Robbed". More proof that MSI used money to buy the 2005 Championship. s with most things in Brazil..justice wasn't served. BUT, on the field Corinthians continued to fall apart and MSI bailed out once the police pressure intensified. Last week Corinthians was playing for its life in the 1st Division and needed to beat another Porto Alegre Team Gremio to stay in the first Division....they tied. With that they depended on all all teams INTER to save them. They needed Inter to beat Goias and therfore save Corinthians in the first Division. An Inter loss would relegate Corinthians to the second division for the first time. INTER fans begged the team to lose but as the game started Inter took a 1x0 lead. Later Goias tied it 1x1. Corinthians was safe until a PK came up. On the PK, Goias missed it twice, but twice the PK was called back because Inter goalie moved. On the thrid try Goias scored and with that Corinthians was now a new minted member of the Brazilian Second Division.
HOW SWEET IT IS! Even better that Corinthians thinks Inter threw the game (in spite of the fact that they scored first and saved two PKS!!). As Fernando Carvalho said A BOLA PUNE....and it took two years, but justice found its way on the field. 2 years after a stolen Championship, Inter is the defending World Champs and Corinthians is heading to the dreaded second division.
JUSTICE SERVED!
