Eufa rubbished the report, claim they are not investigating this match nor have they reported it as suspicious betting activity.

Stands to reason that with liverpool in a must win against a weak team at home, some punters would bet on a big scoreline.

No it doesn't. Not this scoreline, at least. If, and it is not clear at this point, there were a lot of 8-0 bets, that's a pretty ridiculous coincidence. Were there a lot of 7-0 bets? 9-0 bets?

There's two likely scenarios in this case:

1) The reports are false, the 8-0 win was just a case of Besiktas being poor and Liverpool dominating them. Considering United beat Roma 7-1 and Arsenal threw up 7 on Prague, it's not like this score is at all impossible.

2) Besiktas have some serious explaining to do.

I don't think it was a case of people placeing bets on an 8-0 win exactly. What they were doing were placeing bets on say more than 5 goals being scored, which would be a good bet to place considering the importance of the game to Liverpool, and that we were at home.

Sounds like utter nonsense to me. A certain website, in a blatant case of take your pick, was simultaneously running the report under a banner headline and a denial from UEFA as some little sidebar report.

Was I unclear in any way? The numerous 8-0 bets storyline was pure speculation as far as i can tell.
