Yea I saw this on another thread and said....
Its not that you cant get people to go out to the suburbs its just that if the stadiums are in the city they become "events" you know? They become part of the cities culture and develop an atmosphere. People who are on the fence about attending a soccer game will go to games b/c of this.

This is the best line for a Wilpon-NYC FC partnership:
"Otherwise, it's important that MLS commissioner Don Garber (et al) weigh the newest theorems as they pick and choose new ownership groups."
I just don't see many other people being about to have the clout in NYC to pull of a SSS/stadium within the city limits. Maybe Trump, the Stienbrenners boys, or even Bloomberg himself. It's not just about money, a NYC FC owner will need big-time New York City connections and a track record for running a franchise. Wilpon brings that to the table.

This is exactly what I was trying (and failing) to communicate in another thread. A superb article that sums up my feelings 100%.

I've also been trying to communicate the very same idea in multiple threads as well. I think that I just figured out why its not going thru. The reason is that the people that are on these boards are the very suburban kids that the MLS has attracted over the years. OF COURSE they arent going to understand the message!!! They also DONT WANT TO UNDERSTAND the message. Their world is all about mommy and daddy and eeewwwww icky the city life. They disparage anything thats not suburban strip mall safe. Franky I've always found this attitude repelling and hypocritical!
The people that do and will understand the message arent on BS and we need to get this message out to them. That way we can bring the message of NYC FC to the masses sooner than later.

And this isnt about hatred for the burbs. You want fans from all walks of life but having the stadiums in the cities(the heart of a region)it becomes part of that cities culture. People begin to equate the team with their city and passion grows. The team becomes an extension of the city itself.

to add to that, there's more energy in urban areas. and an issue i've harped on before, sports stadiums in urban areas generally are more accessable than in suburban because of public transportation which IS A FACTOR IN NY. only gridiron football (NFL/College) can put a 60K + stadium somewhere in east bumblef*ck and have it sellout. every other sports league in this country would be and after thought if they planned a mass suburbanization.

Urban settings are a focal point. People converge on cities. Its a central meeting ground. Mass transit is developed in a way that it converges in the city. Hence making accessibility to the city easier and anything within city limits just as easy. Millions have already been spent on infrastructure. Why would you want to spend your money building a stadium in god knows where with the possibility of limiting the fans access to the stadium.
This is one of the reasons why the Shea Stadium/Flushing Meadows location is great. Highways converge on it. The Grand Central which takes to Upper Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Long Island. The Long Island Expwy which services all of Queens from Manhattan to Long Island. The Whitestone Expwy that takes you to Northern Queens and the Bronx. The Van Wyck which directs you to Southern Queens, Long Island and Brooklyn.
Also you have two different rail systems converging on it. First and foremost you have the 7 train which leads right into Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan also it has various connections along the way to lead you to different points throughout the city, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Long Island. Then alonside the 7 train you have the LIRR, leading to Long Island and Manhattan.
Bus connections exist as well. Usually surface lines are at major junctions with the trains. You find this at 74th st. and Main st. and both are along the 7 train line. Main St buses connect to the bronx while 74th st connect to all major points in Queens and Brooklyn and Manhattan.
It's even easy for supporter groups from other cities. They can fly into La Guardia and hop a cab to Shea and in 5 mins they can be in their seats. Its that close. Hell they can even walk it from the Airport. 20 min walk at most. lol lol Not that I think that anyone will have the balls to do so.
In the end urban settings are the best locations for "events". Everything is already there in place for people to get to and fro with out much of an ordeal.
