View Full Version : OK you have your first English team, what about your second?

Are you able to produce a second English team that will be just as good as you first team. Is there enough depth? To keep the standard up? Are they experience enough? How well would they be ranked in the world if they played? How big would the gap be between the first team and second team if they were on the ranking?
The Brazil's second team would have a high ranking because of their player depth, but does England have enough players up to it?
Discuss your two teams and compare them. I personally don't have enough knowledge outside the England squad, being largely overseas with little access to football coverage. But I'm sure you are able to comment better here than I would on this topic.
I'm sure there would be interesting things that we could get out of this discussion.

What is your criteria for exclusion? First 11? First 16? First 22?
Personally I think it should be a squad of 16 as it would mimic an England B team as I proposed in another thread. The top 16 would be in action in a WCQ then the rest can play for B.
I think the thread is poorly timed though. We don't really have a 1st team at the moment. Perhaps you should list the 16 we can't pick and we'll pick the other team.

OK. Let use the last England team (when they play Croatia). This mean the first 11 and 7 maximum bench players as per FIFA rules.
So here is the first England team (that is the 18 players that would be ready to play) that you cant name in your second team and this is what you need to compare with.
Carson, Richards, Bridge , Gerrard, Lescott, Campbell, Barry, Lampard, Crouch, Wright-Phillips, J Cole.
Subs: A Cole, James, Brown, Hargreaves, Defoe, Beckham, Bent.
What's your second England team lineup and bench?

We often have to field 2nd string players with the amount of injuries we get.

Wow now I think of it I am struggling to name an 11 let alone an 18. (When did it change from 16 to 18?)

This is a little more difficult than just picking a second team, because there is so much debate as to who should play where and in which system. Without even opening the Gerrard-Lampard debate or the Lennon-SWP-Beckham debate consider that there a group of fans who prefer Owen-Heskey to Owen-Rooney. I believe the only area where there is some agreement is in defence where the first 4 would be
A. Cole Terry Rio Micah
the second team is very debatable but I would go with
Bridge King Lescott S. Taylor

OK then at the risk of laying down the rules for someone else's thread, may I suggest we list our first and second 18s?
Each bench of 7 shall contain 1 goalie, 2 defenders, 2 midfielders and 2 forwards. A player which can play in multiple positions can be nominated in either, for example Phil Neville as defender or midfielder, Gerrard as a possible forward.
I'll get my pencil and paper out and figure out who my top 36 are...

Don't worry about it. Just have 18 players for both teams would do. Are the GKs up to scratch? Is there anyone else that is better than Dowling on the left?
