On paper maybe. Germany was an aweful side at that time, remember? And both Romania and Portugal were not as good as they are now. So the best team in that group was a team that hasnt even qualified this time.

Are you serious?!

That Portugal side in 2000 was ********ing amazing, took the best team the past decade..france with zidane, deshamps etc to 1 minute till pks in the semis in a game where we went toe to toe with them, one of the best games i ever saw.

I dream of scolari coaching our team like euro 2000..even at 50% of how they played would be enough.

My thoughts on Portugals draw:

turkey has a good midfield with Alintop, basturk, sahin, tuncay, Aurelio etc, which will cause us all sort of problems, but their defence is lacking so much.

Switzerland is a strong defensive team with good options on the counter such as Frei and Vontheleon(spl..sorry for bitchering his name)( sound familier?)..we will struggle, especially as they are at home.

Czechs are top quality, but the key is they play a very open game, which suits our style perfectly.

All in all im a bit dissapointed, i wanted a top team in our group so our boys can come in the proper mindset..now im not too sure.

How Portugal perform in the opening stages when declared favourites is well documented.

Don't worry about the English, that's in the past. I think Croatia is going to be a handful for Germany. That game will determine the leader of group B.

You guys really want to beat us, I can smell it. Just hope we make it out of the group so you finally get that shot. :)
Germany and Italy can only meet in final. I'm looking forward to this match!

Sweden I predict will make a disastrous tournament. We are in really bad shape and ended the qualifying in a bad way. Our coach is good when it comes to qualifying us to the tournament. But as a match-coach in important games he is an awfull coach and a coward. I hope he surprises me here in this tournament. Our team is a team with few talents and many old tired players. Usually we have a couple of stars. Now we only have Zlatan.

I'm soooo relieved that we managed to avoid drawing Pot A!

I wanted Austria ... and finally we got them!

Group C is simply a shocker! Should be interesting games (especially between France and Italy:-)...

I did not care which teams would humiliate us. As long as it wouldn't be Germany.

Well.....I guess we will lose 0:3 against Germany (because it's the last group game and Germany will already be qualified....and show mercy - at least I hope so.), 0:5 against Croatia and..............tie 1:1 against Poland (this will be called the MIRACLE OF VIENNA). Happy end for Austria! ;)

Zlatan playing at full steam can carry any team, cheer up.

What's with the pessimism? You always have to stand behind your team and hope for the best. Austria will have a 12th man, make him be heard and felt on the pitch!

YOU ONLY HAVE ZLATAN??????? LOL

Zlatan is good enough to score against every team on the world...no matter how his teammates are performing. Just hand him the ball.....he can do the rest. ;)

alright, this is UEFA, not FIFA. Austria, not South Korea. I believe Moreno won't be called back from retirement

Well, as a matter of fact I AM optimistic. This is why I predict one point against Poland.

Obviously you don't know the Austrian mentality. It is a very pessimistic and bellyaching one. Our team was booed when they recently played 0:0 against Tunisia. As soon as our group opponents lead 2:0 against us, our so-called 12th man will boo the team again.......and not support it. That's the difference to German fans. They support their team no matter what's happening on the field.

You're probably right, guys, my memory fooled me concerning Portugal, I think.
But anyway, this Group C still seems much stronger to me. It's going to be fun. :D

@German Group
We only need to win against Poland or Croatia to advance since Austria should be a default win for us. Or draw against both teams. And whether we finish 1st or 2nd doesnt make a difference I guess. We should have good chances to beat any Group A side. I'm optimistic, I see us making it to the final. And then... revenge against the Italians.

haha there we go! Groups of Death suit us well, hopefully again in 2008. So maybe you'll get your wish, I think a Germany Italy Final would be superb.

Hmm...German, Croatian and Polish fans on tour might outnumber the whole Austrian population.

At least it might feel so at times I bet....

What we need the most, is another coach. Someone who is willing to bring the best players, no matter what personal quarrels he had with them.
And someone who doesn't talk like a Valium pill.

This will be a good Euro IMO.

Concerning the hooligan scene, look out for the Germany and Poland game, maybe even Austria and Germany but I don't know Austria's hools. Turkey also has a score to settle from 2005...

The Switzerland-Turkey game will be a dangerous game.

If you want to put your money on something: Bet on Switzerland advancing to the semifinals. Since the tournament's inception the host country has always reached the semifinals. Now up until 1980 I believe the format was radically different... but still, Hosts have a tremendous advantage, I think Austria might nick a point off someone, that game against Germany might really fire up the crowd and the players.

Groups A and B are sorted, it will be Switzerland and Germany in the semifinal, with Germany progressing.

The other side of the bracket is uncertain, I think Spain will advance from their groups as winners... the rest of the teams in D will be in a dogfight for second place.

In the group of death, I fancy Romania, they have been in difficult groups for qualifying for Euro 04, World Cup 06, and to some extent Euro 08. Romania went up against Holland in these past qualifiers and came away with a draw and a 1-0 win. They are a battle hardened bunch, a team that has grown together and played together and has become a cohesive unit. I thought (aside from Greece who had a vanilla group) they played the best football of the qualifying rounds. Romania will qualify out of this group, they are my dark horse for this tournament.

Right, AND all 3 of them are already represented by big minorities living in Austria.
