I am taking this quote from an interview that Garber did with the New York times about a week and a half ago. I found this interesting
Q: The New York market has been a tough one for the league since the start, in 1996. Now there is talk of a second team in the metropolitan area. How important is New York to success of the league?
A: I don’t believe the theory that as New York goes so goes M.L.S. Yes, we do need success in major markets, but we also need to succeed in smaller markets. Look at baseball - it has underdog teams from smaller markets and they’re successful.
In New York, the Red Bull group very committed and has done a terrific job putting a good team on field and hiring popular and serious coach. [Three days after this interview, Red Bulls and Coach Bruce Arena parted ways.] Their stadium will be state of the art, one of the great stadiums anywhere in the world. Red Bull is supportive, very supportive of having a local rival. We have 13 million people in the N.Y. area and it certainly can support two soccer teams. We’re making progress in discussions with investors. But it is difficult and expensive building facilities with new stadiums going up for the Giants, Jets, Mets, Yankees and Nets. But we’re confident we can achieve a second team in New York in a short period of time.
That last sentance is a very strong sentance - no?

I don't think so. This answer it much more focused on why it's not happening.

I think that for the 18th team of the 2010 the percentages are these :
New York City : 55 %
Montreal : 15%
Vancouver : 10%
Atlanta :10%
Portland : 5%
Las Vegas : 3%
Miami : 2%
Are you agree with me ?

I think that the key line is "in a short period of time". Maybe there is good news even sooner.

I want to see the most fine city in the world and want to see it with a true soccer team. Then I hope to come in New York in 2010 and to see the soccer game of the NYCFC vs Red Bulls at new soccer stadium in Queens !!
P.S. The New York metropolian area has almost 19 million of inhabitants , not 13 million, Mr Garber.....

I've been saying this since day one over in the RBNJ forums. It's even in the MLS webpage. How many thinks that NYC isnt going to occur is beyond me. Originally the league was going to start out with two teams. One in NYC and another in NJ. The NJ team was going to be called NJ!!!! When the originally conceived amount of teams was reduced to 12 from I believe 16, the NY team fell thru. MLS then wanted to call the MetroStars the NY MetroStars but the NJSEA demanded that if they play in the Meadowlands that they be called NJ. They finally settled on a combined NY/NJ Metrostars, which started out as the collapse of identity of the team. Latter on they dropped the NY/NJ from the name and were just known as the MetroStars. This is probably the reason for the lack of identity of the team and the reason why it never took with the people.
I remember peopel making fun of the naming scheme just as much as they were making fun of the jerseys.

Garber speaking on expansion.
At 3:33:
"The next team will be either Philadelphia or St. Louis. That will be hopefully finalized in the next 30 to 60 to 90 days. Seattle and St. Louis or Philadelphia will play in 2009. And the next teams after that, teams 17 and 18, hopefully finalized by the end of '08. Those teams will be $40 million."
