View Full Version : Michael Owen, ALTERNATIVE partners upfront and LEE TRUNDLE to premier league

Alternatives to go upfront with Michael Owen if he is fit and Wayne Rooney is missing again.
Two world class strikers hardly ever play together for either injuries or suspensions. It is not so much of a problem when Rooney needs a partner as he can play with anyone, but Michael Owen is a different prospect. He does need a big striker, so what are the options available to us if Owen needs a big target man to flick balls on to him.
Emile Heskey – he has always played well with Emile and scores goals for fun, but he is clumsy at time and is very hit and miss.
Dean Ashton – Now starting to get fit again but is a better all round footballer than Emile Heskey.
Kevin Davies – Use’s his physique to busy the centre backs, and flick on the balls, Owen would love to play upfront with him I think, and I don’t know why he is dismissed. When he plays for Bolton, they are a different side altogether.
Carlton Cole – Playing regularly for West Ham, and has a lot to offer the national side if he get’s chosen.
Peter Crouch is always going to be there, but I don’t think he is as good with Owen as the above players could be.
A few seasons back I would have said James Beattie. You don’t lose quality that is all I am saying and if he can get back into the Premier League and show the promise he did once, then I think he could be another option.
And whilst I am on the subject of players who don’t play – Lee Trundle should be given a chance to play in the Premier league. I still don’t know why he has never had the chance, he is better than the likes of piennar etc, and just wont get the chance and it is ashame.

Lee Trundle's one of those players who looks good in a highlights compilation.
He's 31 and doesn't have the fitness for top flight football.

This entire post is based on a hypothetical. We have almost a full year to have most of our players healthy and ready for this competition.

Rooney behind Owen and Rooney wouldn't work because you couldn't pick an adequate 3 to sit behind them in midfield.

You're right, you don't lose quality. Unfortunately, Beattie never had that much quality. He had one good year and a few reasonable ones, other than that there was nothing.

It is a bit interesting that Davies was never given a shot, despite being a key member of a Bolton team that did so well for a few years. Obviously, he wouldn't have been prolific, but I think it would've been interesting because he has the ability to drift wide as well having played on the right of a front 3 at Bolton, which is something none of the other target men really bring, IMO (Heskey is too far removed from his winger days at Leicester).

agree that this is purely hypothetical at his point.
but michael owen being fit is becoming a bigger and bigger "if."

What winger days at Leicester? The few games he played as a 16/17 year old when he came on as sub? Apart from that he played centre forward.

I was under the impression he made his breakout there, but I suppose you are slightly better placed to comment;)

Any in this list would be ok to go upfrount in England games if Owen or Rooney was out:
Crouch - Proving he can play for England and score goals at the highest level.
Defoe - Not got the height but
Ashton - I would play him from the start once he starts getting experince for playing for England.
Heskey - Proves he can play well when on form and him and Owen played very well together.
Carlton Cole - Can't see why he can't be given a chance in a few friendlys and be given the chance to prove himself if he does then he can play for England more as i said no reason why he should not be given a chance.
James Beattie - If he carrys on playing well for Sheff Utd maybe he should get another chance to come off from the bench and be used as a back - up can't see him being given starts for England as he is scoring alot 12 goals this season but they are not are the highest level.
In a few years time Scott Sinclair should be given a chance.

Lee '6 goals in 32 appearances for Southport' Trundle for Brazil!

Personaly I'd prefer it Crouch didn't play for England. That said he is the best striker to play with Owen if Rooney is out, for the simple fact that he scores goals for England. People will find excuse's why those goals don't really count, like they were scored against easy apponants, ect. But the thing is I didn't see anyone else scoring many goals in those games.
