Garber is very smart, and MLS has thrived under his stewardship the past eight years. He's also not quite right about where the center of gravity is for an MLS team in a market as complex as this. It's not in the center of Miami-Dade, as he seems to believe, or Broward. Instead, it's at a venue straddling the two counties: Dolphin Stadium.

What I'm seeing here is a lover of the game desperate for a team.

Either that, or 90s nostalgia is just more powerful than I had ever imagined.

I read somewhere else that MLB is considering playing some Marlins v Mets games in Puerto Rico. Combine that with the recent Dolphin-NYGiant game in London, and I get the picture that Miami/FL is not the place for MLS, now or in the future.

i think it would be an optimal location, but unless it was a rent free deal like quest, not optimal finacially.

Both the Dolphins and U of Miami play the entire seasons starting next year. And the baseball team is still there for a few more years.
No room for a MLS team ?

I heard the Spice Girls are getting back together. I'm going to see them up here.

From the article, it sounded like the Marlins have some kind of 2010 deadline and are expecting to be in a stadium in the next couple years. I saw an article on the Expansion boards about Miami having possibly figured out a place for a Marlins stadium. MLS has been saying that the 17th/18th teams would be 2010/2011. So that all fits nicely in line with Miami being one of the last two teams.
That aside, the article does sound more like someone being hopeful than anything substantial.

So they'll play on Thursdays in September and October.
Also, the Marlins are trying to get the deal out of the way, but it looks like it'll be the OB site. They want to do it by the end of the year, so they don't have to try and extend the lease at DS.

You get all that from two games from two different leagues being played outside Miami...wow, I wonder if any one would come to the same conclusions about New York soccer future being that both the Mets and the Giants were both playing outside of New York City with Miami teams!

Uhh, they chose the Dolphins because the Dolphins, believe it or not, are popular in England. Not because they've been sucking.
H. Wayne Huizenga is committed to keeping the Dolphins in Dolphin Stadium. He's not committed to making them not suck, but he is committed to keeping them in Miami.

Well, the Marilns don't have a lot of fan support, despite 2 rings. The Heat didn't matter in Miami until Shaq got there. The Dolphins are really the only game in town. Hurricanes don't get a lot of support either unless they are in BCS contention.
Don't think soccer will work on MLS level here. Move along.

And in other news, MLS will never work in places like Toronto, Seattle or Salt Lake City (where is that)?
