Hmmm...that would be an interesting group, especially if England miss out in this as well. :)
I'm not too concerned since Germany always qualifies for the WC, no matter what the circumstances but I wouldn't mind this group:
Deutschland
Bulgarien
Belgien
Mazedonien
Aserbaidschan
San Marino :D

I think it's a joke that there is no "pre-qualification round" for lower-ranked nations, because there are simply too many uncompetitive matches. Club managers are right to complain. I'd rather see more frequent games against other top teams, be it friendlies or in another context.

They barely are Andorra beaters ;)
I worry a bit about Hiddink but it could have been worse.
Sure we'll lose a few points against Finland, Russia and Wales but so will these three.

Well to this day Russia is the only country that ever made Germany miss out on a major tournament. I watched 3 games of Russia during euro qualification and was quite disappointed by their play. They'll also replace their plastic pitch with real grass. Of course having a young squad and Hiddink at the helm they might still step it up when qualification starts.

in 1967, germany travelled to albania and played a midfield of overath, beckenbauer and netzer for the first time ever (i am pretty sure), and they probably took it too easy and drew 0-0, which left them 1 pt behind yugoslavia and prevented them from advancing to the quarters, hence possibly the semis (ie. what was at the time the "final tournament"). they had a better goal differece to yugoslavia and also beat them 3-1 in germany and lost 1-0 in yugoslavia.
that's the only time. and ussr were not involved

So Yugoslavia progressed ahead of Germany in 1967. Strange that this seems to be ignored by the german press ("Germany never failed in a qualification campaign to a Euro or WC....").
Thanks, I learned a lot since joining this board.

so what gregoriak is trying to say is that they don't have a hope in hell against germany

only brazil has qualified for all world cups and copas (which don't have qualification rounds as far as i know).
so other than this, which was at a time when only the semis onwards was considered the "tournament", germany have qualified for EVERYTHING they've entered (did not travel in 1930 wc and banned in 1950 wc) so that's an awesome record which is considerably better than even italy, and if you're still bothered by the press, then don't worry they talk a lot of ignorant crap about past teams.
an interesting stat is that if you add up the number of quarterfinals, semis, finals and wins for germany, it is more than england, france and holland put together.
and germany get to the semifinal of 70% of tournaments they enter.
who wants to go post that in the england forum?

another impressive statistic is that Germany lost just 2 of its 64 WC qualification games, not too shabby. :o

Yeah banned in 1950 but then straight in next tournament Germany goes and wins the world cup in 54.
That 70% rate means there is no other team in the world who can match the semi final rate of Germany.
We were the first to qualify for Euro 08 right?

This group should not be a problem whatsoever. Who knows if Hiddink will stay with Russia after the Euros and Finnland won't have players like Hypia and Litmanen around much longer.
On the other hand, Holland got a tough group and so did Portugal, FOR ONCE!

At least the statistics against these teams shouldn't scare us. ;) I'm contented with the group, even though the Russians surely can be a dangerous opponent for spot 1.

Don't get me wrong, Russia is a good team and Finland is ok, but we will easily go through in 1st place. 1. We are not England :D 2. We will not be raped by injuries like this qualification, it was just fuking ridiculous!
I see us first without any difficulty, even though we might lose 1 or 2 games. It means nothing, we can crush weak teams without difficulty and that's what matters. That means Russia/Finland at home, we will definitely win at least one of those games and at least tie another away from the two. With practically winning most of the other games vs the weak teams, we will surely be in 1st place. All solved ladies and gents!
