If he at least realises what a defensive midfielder is then this entire discussion might be worthwhile...

Dont worry...i read 20 books on midfielders and searched through many internet sites and FINALLY understand what a defensive midfielder is ;)

Those 2 general sets/categories of defensive midfielders you posted earlier, i wouldnt consider Christian Poulsen (Sevilla) under either one...his game is totally different to those 6 DM's. As Alves and previously Puerta would attack down the flanks...his main role was to play as a in-game replacement full-back (during his time under Ramos)...and he did very well

My last post off topic ;). Liverpool have only played 3 games with 2 CM as well as Gerrard on the pitch this season (Blackburn, Arsenal, Newcastle). In previous seasons when Rafa didnt feel that Pennant was up to it, Gerrard played many games on the right but this season he has stuck with him in the middle, so much so that when he was out of form at start of season, some Reds supporters on this forum and others were calling for him to be moved to the right until he gets back in form.

Current best pair of CBs (other than Carra and Agger :p)

Carvalho and Terry

Yay!

As I said previously, every player is different and each has specific instructions in their teams. However, generally speaking those are the two main groups and every defensive midfielder will fit into either one although obviously not completely. Poulsen's fundamental role means he belongs in the first category (for Sevilla).

My last post off topic ;). Liverpool have only played 3 games with 2 CM as well as Gerrard on the pitch this season (Blackburn, Arsenal, Newcastle). It is actually double that. Three central midfielders were used in the games against Portsmouth, Wigan, Everton, Arsenal, Blackburn and Newcastle. Injuries prevented that from occurring in some games, tactics in others.

Carvalho and Terry

My problem is that while both partnerships are good it has everything to do with Agger/Carvalho. I feel that others are better both individually and as a partnership. Add to that my points about midfield protection and respective styles of play. You can personally disagree with my defensive midfield categories or the extend to which each side attacks. However, you must agree that not having a defensive midfielder and playing in a very attacking side does disadvantage a central defensive partnership. That was the situation Ferdinand and Vidic found themselves in (and still do without Hargreaves) which is why I rate them higher than those from the other top four. That and I rate each better individually ('Ferdinand > Carvalho > Agger' and (Vidic > Carragher/Terry). Again, no doubt you will disagree. What I do find amazing is that Vidic gets all of the headlines and praise from other fans because of his style of play but Ferdinand is completely ignored when he has performed better and is far more important to the team.

Toure and Gallas

But Gallas isn't Ivorian and he is not even of African descent.

have you been awarded yet for coming up with such an awesome post. why would you bother taking the time to post such an ignorant statement. your opinion isn't needed or wanted. next time you're about to post something as pointless as this, remember that sometime's your better off just keeping mouth shut.

The best pair of CB is the world today are Alex Silva and Miranda from Sao Paulo Futebol Clube.
Sao Paulo suffered only 25 in 57 games thanks to them.
And they have to keep up with brazilian strikers.

I dont know where you get this info from but you are very very wrong
vs Portsmouth - midfield: Pennant, Momo, Xabi, Yossi. Gerrard on bench, came on around same time Xabi went off

vs Wigan - midfield: Pennant, Gerrard, Masch, Riise

OK i missed 1, Everton, Blackburn, Arsenal and Newcastle are the only 4 games all season, in all comps that this has happened...out of a total of 19 games...you are ABSOLUTELY wrong...and you cant hide from this one...get your facts right before you start pretending that you know about Liverpool

We had injuries to Kewell, Pennant and Yossi...this means that injuries prevented us from having wingers...the total opposite of what you said...weve had 4 fit CM in our squad all season

Rio and Vidic probably have the best partnership in the world.

I definitely struck a nerve and we all know what that means.

EDIT: If you have failed to realise I am taking the piss. There's no need to be stroppy about it. Let's move on.

Ricardo Carvalho & Jorge Andrade(when healthy)- Portugal

At NT level I would agree but unfortunately the latter continually gets crocked. It was pretty shit to watch him sit on the pitch for Juventus knowing that his knee had gone again. :(

Carvalho-Pepe will be better I think.

Amazing.

Although Andrade was absolutly top class, and has the leadership we badly miss without Figo and Rui Costa.

Heres hoping he recovers swiftly in January/Feb, and is at the Euro.

Also, Ferdinand is by far the best english centreback..although I'm not sure what sort of partner would suit him. Vidic is great as well, but pace can prove to be effective against those two at times.

Maybe someone with a bit of pace..Gallas would probably be a perfect match.

Pace can work against Vidic but Ferdinand has regularly had no problems with the best and quickest defenders around. Ferdinand's weakness is against big physical strikers. It never used to be an issue when he was at Leeds but at Man Utd he has his image to consider... which is why their partnership works so well. They complement each other perfectly.
