Well done Nürnberg!
I expected the Club to make it and they didn't disappoint me.

Congrats on the "home" win (1,500 Club fans among the 2,500  crowd) and on surprisingly making it to the ko-round (this group wasn't easy at all)! :) Terrible performance in the first 20 minutes (still ask myself how it could happen in such an important game... maybe it had to do with the weird changes in the defence - Reinhardt on the left and the CB Beauchamp on the right wing), but then the team finally proved its quality & character (the 2nd half was a lot better, even though the defence looked chaotic again between the 2:1 and 3:1 )! The efficiency in UEFA-Cup away games is simply impressive (only few chances are needed to score)...

With this victory, the team compensated its fans for a disappointing Bundesliga "Vorrunde" ... and got awarded with € 400,000.

Possible opponents for the 1/16 final are:

Olympique Marseille, Glasgow Rangers, PSV Eindhoven, Rosenborg Trondheim, Benfica Lissabon, Sporting Lissabon or Slavia Prag.

Slavia would be a nice draw for the fans, I think. ;)

Man, I am so excited - twenty years as a fan and wearing my various FCN jerseys with most people not knowing what that meant. Now random European fans here in California are hearing about Nurnberg and recognizing the stickers on my truck and the patches on my clothes.

Last year DFB Pokal Meister, and this year UEFA Cup Competitor - How amazing will it be if they become some Cinderella team and win in Manchester England???

I really don't care about any replys from people saying I'm crazy - I'm riding this high all the way through the Winter break!!!!!

I am über-elated that my boys won!
I knew they could do it, and they went and kick some ass!
I couldn't ask for a better Geburtstaggeschenk! Danke jungs!!!

@Solis: So you've for FCN stuff on your vehicle? Same here...(you can ask Uwe (Borussia) he's seen the pictures as proof...my car is a "rolling billboard" for FCN, Jens Lehmann and DFB...) Now if only americans would stop saying "Nuremberg"...that always irritates me, it's not difficult to pronounce NÜRNBERG the way it is. That "Nuremberg" crap has always irritated me...

Anyway, a perfect day, and the perfect way for the boys to end out the 2007 year. :D

Herzlichen dank jungs!!! Einmal Glubärä, immer Glubärä!!!

Well, you have to remember that we Americans don't have "umlauts."

I hope you were kidding there. I assume you were not because I don't see any smiles.

If you were not kidding, I think being "irritated" that most Americans can't say Nuernberg is a bit ridiculous.

That would be like me being pissed off that most Germans can't pronounce my first name (Keith) correctly. I don't get irritated by that. You guys just don't do the "th" thing. We don't do umlauts. Simple as that.

Well, actually, I'm not born in Germany. I'm born and mostly raised in Toronto. I am German, just sadly not a native born.

And I was to a point joking, just the posting format wouldn't let me add anything else, it kept giving me an error message. I have always found it just slightly annoying, but mostly at the Sports Commentators, who should know a little better how to say it I should think, because I don't think the "ü" is difficult at all. And don't feel bad about no one being able to say your name right, no one in North America (that includes my home country of Canada) is ever able to correctly pronounce my first name either (because it's in old Fränkisch dialect spelling). Although, in your defense, your name is more common and "normal" than mine ;)

And finally the opponent for the 1/16 final of the UEFA Cup. What a draw (IMO the strongest & most attractive club you could get)!:) Just imagine Celtic would have become 3rd in their group and would play Nürnberg now ... I think I missed a dream:-)

From the UEFA homepage:

SL Benfica v 1. FC Nürnberg

Lourenço Coelho, Benfica director

"There were other teams that might have been more difficult but there are no easy matches. German teams are always very tough and hard to beat but we will try to get through."

Hans Meyer, Nürnberg coach

"It's great for the club to qualify and play against an opponent with such a big name. I'm happy for our fans. For us, it's a big challenge. Hopefully we'll have some more fun in the next two games. Our main task in the spring will be to get off the bottom of the Bundesliga. With the motivation of the UEFA Cup, we want to do well in the second half of the season."

As a nativeborn American, who learned how to speak butchered German while I was living there, I can tell you I spent nine years in Nürnberg and probably still don't pronounce it is entirely correct. The ü is one of the more difficult sound for me to make. Just ask my wife. :-)

Una bella serata.

I can only hope that those of us who are unable to attend might be able to watch the game here in the USA.

If I were still over there I would probably travel to the game, but I can't guarantee it. I'm not even going to go see my alma mater (University of South Florida) play in their biggest bowl game yet (the Sun bowl), but that's another story.

Here is the response I received from the ZDF.

--Sehr geehrter Herr

For the DFB Pokal I was able to get them to lift the GEO block by pleading with the Bundesliga and the DFB. Since I didn't know about the block until it was almost too late I didn't think there was much chance of me getting them to lift it for this game. Last time it was the president in charge of international rights for the ZDF who gave the go ahead to allow the US to watch it. Maybe if I start now.

So there's no excuse that you didn't find the FCN thread...;)

Btw: Nice pics! Are those 2 kids your grandchilds? Sorry to hear & see that you have to use the wheel chair. Makes me think about how happy I should be that I can do some sports ... since such tragic accidents can happen to everyone.

Did I tell you that my FCN brother was in Tampa/St. Petersburg during his three-week Florida trip with his wife last summer? Very nice city/region where you live (from what I've seen on the pics he sent me)!
