I was curious about the relation between the Prem/World Cups/Euro Championships/Champions League, and came up with these nerdy figures:
Between '98 and '04 what UEFA countries did most players that appeared in the World Cup or Euro final play their club football (Euro's 2000, and '04/ World Cup '98, '02, '06):
1. Italy (75 players that played their club football in Italy appeared in a WC or Euro final between '98 and '04)
2. France (30)
3. Germany (27)
4. England (24)
5. Portugal (18)
6. Greece (15)
7. Spain (13)
(note: Brazil would be 5th with 21 just taking three World Cups into consideration)
Between 1997 and 2007, the UEFA Champions League final (both teams) had the most players of this nationality:
1) Spain (64) (Spanish players made 64 appearances in the UEFA CL final between 1997 and 2007)
2) Italy (62)
3) Germany (50)
4) Brazil (29)
5) France (27)
6) England (21)
7) Portugal (18)
It might be tough to draw really meaningful conclusions, but I think it's safe to say that there is a lot of room for improvement in player development in the Prem.
