Last year, the team had difficultly breaking down defensive minded lower level teams and effectively countering in the CL and against the top four in the EPL.

I attribute this mostly to GH safety first tactics and the lack of a central midfielder with enough creativity to run the break or breakdown a packed in d.

How do you think the addition of Kewell will change this turpor? More width, sure. But still the same problems of last season.

Thoughts?

Apparently, we'll see a much more offensive minded team. Putting Finnan and Riise (and giving Babbel another chance) as left and right back certainly points towards that, as does the acquisition of Kewell. The type of midfielder that we missed (that you mentioned) is Steven Gerrard, who just had a rough time last year. If he comes in full strenght, it will be a whole new team.

I love Gerrard, but he is not a player to break down a packed defense. He just does not have the dribbling and passing skill in really tight quarters. I know these types of players are rare, even more so in England, but that's what the team will need in some circumstances this year.
