Champions League 3rd qualifying round draw

CSKA Moscow (Russia) or Vardar Skopje (Macedonia) vs Sparta Prague (Czech Republic)

Celta Vigo (Spain) v Leotar (Bosnia) or Slavia Prague (Czech Republic)

Not a bad draw for Sparta Prague. Slavia has to get by a difficult Bosnian side before they can even think about Celta Vigo.

Slavia won 2-1 away to Leotar (Bosnia).

Never say never. Perhaps Vigo will remember their 3-0 defeat in Liberec and panic. Admittedly, the weather was a lot worse then but if Slavia can score an early goal who knows ? Or am I clutching at straws again...

Yes you are correct. It isn't out of the realm of possiblity that Slavia could win 3-0...

Sigma played Celta Vigo two years ago in the UEFA Cup. Sigma lost 4-0 away and won 4-3 at home.

Sparta are through to the group stage after a 2-2 tie at home against Vardar.

Not the best result in the world, but I will take it. It is great to see a Czech club back in the group stages... even if it is Sparta.

Hopefully ESPN/TSN will show a Sparta game this year on TV... I doubt it...

I wish I were in Prague this fall to catch these great teams. Unfortunately, it's going to be another rough ride for Sparta.

Yeah, I would love to see the game against Chelsea and Beskitas (for some reason). I think they might be able to surprise a few people. It is crucial that they don't lose any games at home.

Yeah, it's a merited treat to have CL football in Prague. Coupla years ago I was able to catch games with Arsenal, Lazio and Barcelona, the latter being an incredible match that Sparta played sooo well and should have won. Somebody I think missed a penalty late. But what a game.

'Tis true that the Czech clubs, whether Sparta or Slavia or Liberec, usually defend themselves pretty well at home, even against top flight competition.

And hey, you never know. One thing that surprises everyone every year is that there are a lot of suprises in the group stages of the CL, especially the first one. On paper it's Chelsea and Lazio. But in reality, given the record, anything can and will happen.

Personally, I happen to think in Sparta's group, Lazio and Chelsea will in fact move on. In Lazio's case, I just think that club is ready and has been solid since last year and now Roberto Mancini's got 'em raring to go. They won't slip up.

Nor do I expect supertalented Chelsea to slip up, at least not this early.

Lazio and Chelsea should advance....

I just hope Sparta Prague can win a couple of games (at the very least).

UEFA Cup --- Qualifying Round --- 2nd leg

Zhenis Astana (Kazakhstan) 1 Viktoria Zizkov (Czech Republic) 3
(Viktoria Zizkov win 6-1 on aggregate)

Good away win for Zizkov. Hopefully they will get a good draw tomorrow and be able to advance further into the tournament.

Uefa Cup --- 1st round draw

Brondby (Denmark) vs Zizkov
FK Sartid (S&M) vs Slavia Praha
FC Kaiserslautern (Germany) vs Teplice

Tough draw for all three Czech clubs. All have a reaasonable chance of advancing, but they also have a good chance of being eliminated.

Teplice beat FCK 5-2 on aggregated in the 2002 Inter-Toto cup.

Sorry to say but I think Zizkov will loose to Brondby.... Michael Laudrup's new playing style is fantastic in this season's first four games Brondby didn't concede a single goal. :) (Although they lost to FC Copenhagen last week :( )

Haha.. no I believe Zizkov will beat Brondby. Zizkov will win at home and lose at Brondby, but they will go through on away goals. :)

I have a question about Brondby.... how is Jón Rói Jacobsen doing at Brondby? Does he get a lot of playing time? I am asking because I follow Faroese soccer.... :)

Well Jon Roi has played four matches since he came to Brondby from HB Torshavn. The team is simply too strong at the moment to get a spot in the team and the level between Faeroese Football and Danish Football are probably too big.

Sparta Praha 0 Chelsea 1

Sparta gives up a late goal.

I was hoping they would be able to get one point from this game. They have already dug themselves in a hole.... :(
