I get a modest, but appreciated, mileage stipend for games and tournaments more than sixty miles out of Atlanta. The team would cover a hotel room if I asked for one. Meals would be on me.

If I were you, I would schedule a meeting with your DOC. Although your manager can work out some small details with you, your club should already have a protocol in place for compensation. If not, talk to your DOC and be part of the solution. Contact other clubs and work out something competitive for all your club coaches.
I can't find my current contract right now, but I typically receive: mileage, meals, hotel, airfare, rental car/cab, tournament t-shirt, etc.

I think it's definitely something to sort out beforehand... I'd rather just guess at what it's all going to cost and tack that on to the coaching fee... that way I don't have to account for it all and I'd be spending my money rather than theirs. On the other hand I've never coached a team where travel expenses would account to much more than an occasional 50 mile trip once or twice a season. Basically though I'd just say as long as everyone is on the same page and your compensation after travel expenses seems fair to everyone it shouldn't make a difference.

We went through the whole reimbursment rigermorole for years before sitting down and figuring out a flat amount that covered expenses for all of us.... we now receive $750 per season in addition to our salary to cover costs.

Depends on the program, paying coaches has to have money come from somehwere which raises the cost of the program for the parents.
Also, if the coach has a kid on the team, then they are just a parent in that regard and other parents are paying their own way.
Basically, its something pre-arranged and dependant on the level of the program.
