Today I was a stand-in ar for a game where ar2 failed to show. It was a U13 girls game. The defense wins the ball on a long pass from the atking team, turns and passes it back to their GK.
A mother, who had a daughter on the atking team, stands up and yells,
"Hey! You can't do that. That is illegal!"

Player has the ball, is dribbling towards the opponents goal in the opponents half of the field.

One defender and the goalkeeper remain between him and the goal.

Defending team coach yells to his second to last defender...."Just stand there, when he passes you he'll be "off" "

Player dribbles past and scores

Coach goes crazy wanting offside call.

Ya just can't make this stuff up!!:D

What am I missing?

My guess is that the GK never actually picked it up...otherwise sounds illegal to me.

A crucial bit of information...should that be the case.

It does not matter if the keeper picks it up on not. The passback itself is not illegal. It is illegal for the keeper to pick up the backpassed ball but at the time the mother jumped up, nothing illegal had occured.

Nothing - the ball was passed back to the GK who kicked it up the field. The spectator was complaining that the field player could not pass the ball back to the keeper treating her as a field player.
