As Goff said that his sources told him, Gomez, Olsen and Emelio were selected to the best XI by MLS (http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20071117&content_id=129790&vkey=pr_mls&fext=.jsp).
Supporters' Shield winners D.C. United led the way with three members of the Best XI,
Oh, and Luciano was also named Newcomer of the Year.
And here's Goff's Sunday edition article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/17/AR2007111701556.html) on the same.

Congrats to our Best XI players. Well deserved and a first for Benny after all these years. Not sure if we had a Best XI back in 98 when he was rook of the year.
Sort of seems foolish to have your MVP also be Newcomer of the year. I would have thought that the additional award would be to share the wealth amongst all the new players with the DP. Funny that a DP didn't win either of them.
Congrats and thank you Emilio! Adding to the Tradition of Excellence that is DC United.

They did, but as good as he was there were some great midfielders in MLS back then and he wouldn't have really been close. The Best XI midfield back then was probably Etch, Nowak, maybe Preki, maybe Jason Kreis.
Just checked - Etch, Nowak, Cienfuegos, Armas.

I just noticed that Blanco was nominated for MVP but didn't even make Best XI. Odd.

Between him and Guevara's thievery in 2004, it obviously is something MVP voters take into consideration.

While I'll concede he was one of the best 11 players in MLS by seasons end, I couldn't see naming someone to the Best XI when he played in less than half the games this year.
And if you aren't a Best XI player, you really can't be the MVP, can you? So I was disapointed to learn that he was an MVP finalist as I didn't think he'd played enough in the league this year. But, I also assumed that if he was an MLP finalist he'd be on the Best XI.
The whole thing is kinda weird and just seems like MLS wanted him as a finalist just to get his name out there in the media, especially the Hispanic media.
That said, if he plays next season like he did in his half a season here, I think he'll be a lock for Best XI and just might be MVP. He pretty much transformed that team.
But he's still a diving, whining cheat. A good one, but still a cheat. But villains are good for MLS and he is definitely fun to hate.
Of more importatance, congrats to the DCU guys. Emilio was a no-brainer but Gomez and Olsen were nice to see. Certainly making the Best XI in each of the three full seasons he's played in MLS should help Gomez' negotiating stance this winter.
Not many players have been Best XI three times and even fewer have done it three straight years. He's had one of the best runs of form in league history and, quite frankly, deserves to be paid to show that.
As for Olsen, nice to see his season rewarded. He had one of those years where he was good statistically but more important did all the things that usually go unrewarded that good teams need.
This award gets him a step closer to the Hall of Fame, which I hope he makes. It'll still be tough, but this will help.

He's transferring to Acapulco in the off-season. He'll make the first XI, there, easy! :)
