View Full Version : Internationale as the basis for a song

I love the Internationale. I think it is a moving song that creates a deep feeling of unity, and it may work as a stadium-wide song. We could take the basic tune and change out some of the lyrics.

Here is the refrain with Sounders lyrics:

So come brothers and sisters,
For the Sounders carry on.
The great Seattle Sounders,
Unite us all in song.
So Sounders, let's all rally,
For this is the time and place!
The great Seattle Sounders,
Unite the human race!

Here's an mp3 to the tune: http://folk.ntnu.no/makarov/temporary_url_20070929kldcg/internationale-en-billy_bragg_1990.mp3

Off-topic: every time I head Billy Bragg I think of the Rancid song "The Wars End" from ...And Out Come the Wolves" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc81r1TdUCk

On-Topic: that is a good idea for a song bright.

It's a pretty good tune.

There are a couple of folk and hymn tunes - whether secular like the Internationale or religious like Cwm Rhondda ("Can we play you every week!") - that are easy and pretty rousing (and in major keys).

Some random ideas (blatantly stolen from camp songs):
For a dirty player (to "How Dry I Am"):
"We sold our cow,
we sold our cow,
we got no need for your bull, now."

Or an infamous diver:
"Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
Ha Ha! Fooled us,
You're a submarine."

I think the last line (and maybe the third-to-last line, to help with rhyming) could be swapped out with something more soccer/sport/rah-rah specific. I do like the idea of keeping the word "unite" in there, though. Anyone want to take a crack?

Here's my take. Needs some tweaking still though.

Internationale

Arise ye great Seattle Sounders
Arise ye faithful friends
Come listen to our voices thunder
We’ll sing and never end
Now on with strength and ambition
Seattle Sounders arise, arise!
We’ll charge headfirst to the opposition
And spurn their best to win the prize

Chorus:
So comrades, come rally
And the [opponent] let us face;
The great Seattle Sounders
With open arms embrace.
So Sounders, let's all rally
For this is the time and place!
The great Seattle Sounders
Unite the human race!

Let no opponents try to divide us
Let nothing stand in our way
Come sing and cheer and stand beside us
As we drive the [opponent] away
Behold! We are a thing of beauty
Listen to this Sounders throng
Each forever sworn to do our duty
And strike the [opponent] with this song:

Chorus:
So comrades, come rally
And the [opponent] let us face.
The great Seattle Sounders,
With open arms embrace
So Sounders, let's all rally,
For this is the time and place!
The great Seattle Sounders,
Unite the human race!

After a victory we could change the second line of the chorus to "For we're victors in this place" or something like that.

Kaged, I listened to the recording and sung your lyrics along with it, and it was awesome! You did a great job with the verse lyrics.

"Arise ye great Seattle Sounders
Arise ye faithful friends
Come listen to our voices thunder
We’ll sing and never end"

"Behold! We are a thing of beauty
Listen to this Sounders throng
Each forever sworn to do our duty
And strike the [opponent] with this song:"

The classiness and depth of your lyrics makes the last line of the refrain "Unite the human race!" not seem so cheesy anymore. And I guess leaving that part in there is an homage to the basic intent of the Internationale. So let's never take that out. It is really intense and feels great to sing it!

I think it might be best to substitute "brothers and sisters" for "comrades" in the refrain, though. I have a little commie in me ("Say hi, Pavel." "Privyet!"), but other people might flinch at the use of that term. :)

I like the lyrical switch-up for when we win.

Thanks Paul. I had been taken aback when I first heard it (wasn't previously familiar with the song) and had been working on this ever since. Good call on the comrades line though, I was simply trying to take as much as I could from both the original version and the Billy Braggs version and so I left it in, but a switch to "brothers and sisters" might be in order. There's two or three other lines that don't syncopate quite as nicely as I would like but, oh well. I'm actually working on a couple others, including one as a rally cry for keeping the Sounders name. Should I post them here or does anyone in the ECS (is there a particular person/group in charge of the songs) want me to get in touch with them directly? I realize that it will be extremely difficult for lots of people to learn the words to long anthems like that, especially if it's a tune not everyone is immediately familiar with, so it's mostly shorter/easier stuff. But I would love to be a part of a supporters group that stands in the middle of either the east or west side and sings for much of the game, obviously co-ordinating w/ the south end supporters (and others that pop up) via walkie-talkie or something, that's why I'm working on the songs.

You guys are rockin' the mic. Keep up the good work. I also like the walkie talkie idea! Very good stuff!

This sight http://home.wanadoo.nl/maarten.geluk/ has football chants from all over the world. I'm sure there's something there that could work for our team.

I also would like to sit on the east or west side (for a better view and so the supporters can be seen on broadcasts), and think it would be a great idea to spread out the singing.

If we had the same song coming from the south and the east side it would probably sound a lot louder and give a surround sound effect in the stadium.

p.s. that song is sweet, and I'll get on memorizing it as soon as it's approved as an official song for the supporters groups.

I think this song is pretty good. But the best possible and most appropriate song for the Sounders would be to simply use Smells Like Teen Spirit. Tune and Lyrics.

Load up on guns
Bring your friends
Its sucks to lose
And to pretend
your overboard
and self assured
I know I know
A dirty word

Seattle (x 16) (see-at-ul)

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
You look stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yea

We're best at what we do best
And for this gift we feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Seattle (x 16) (see-at-ul)

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
You look stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yea

And I forget
Just what it takes
And yet I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard
Its hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

Seattle (x 16) (see-at-ul)

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
You look stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yea

Seeing Seattle is one market that knows what its doing in MLS ( along with Toronto) I would think it would be great if you were able to create a song for your team that you could use before and after a match ala:

YouTube - You'll Never Walk Alone Liverpool V Barcelona

No reason you cannot use YNWA though!!

I'm not an authentic Sounders FC fan, but I really hope they succeed, they have a great fan base already.

I think complicated songs aren't the best thing at first, especially with so many first time soccer fans in the stadium, they'd get really confused.

I am from Milwaukee, and propose a popular cheer heard here with a twist.

WE ARE
(clap clap)
SOUND-ERS
(clap clap)
(repeat)

It is we are marquette at the basketball games, but it speaks loud about unity of the fans.
