Ok.. there are ground rules... must have been an important game, and the effort needs to be more than one goal... unless its something like Mustafa Hadji beating 9 Sweeds in the 94 world cup and then scoring... damn that was a goal!!!
Ok... Here is my nominee.... Rivaldo...
He scored a hatrick for Barca to win the la liga title and clinch the scoring title (I believe)... it was like 2-3 years ago... i cant remember...
First goal--- A free kick from 30+ meters out, a curler that left the goalie no chance... i think that was an equalizer, or it gave them the lead...
Second Goal... Second half, from the same distance after a good run and then let one loose... i think that was an equalizer
Third Goal... Like a minute left the scores are level, Frank De Boer chips a ball to Rivaldo a crappy pass when you think back, its like just below his waist, Rivaldo's back to the goal... he knocks it up with his thigh, looks to the heavens, chests the ball to control it and fires a bicycleta.... bottom corner... the most beautiful thing... that is a work of art, better than anything from beethoven, picasso, damn it was pretty, so what are yours

Raul. Aside from the fact that he is the greatest scorer ever for Spain and that it seems he's been around forever...He destroyed Manchester United at Old Trafford this year. After the thrashing, Alex F. himself said he was the best in the world.

Alan Shearer scoring 30+ league goals for Blackburn in three consecutive seasons (1993/4 1994/5 and 1995/6).

I also consider that performance by Rivaldo against Valencia the best. All three of the goals were great. That last goal was magnificant, my favorite goal of all time. Not only was it extremely skillful and acrobatic, it came at a very dramatic point in the game and the season.
When he is in top form he can be the best player in the world. Even though he had a poor season at Milan last year, by his standards, I still think he is capable of scoring 20-25 goals if he getsregular playing time.

Paolo Rossi on a fifth of July 1982 committed the cold blooded assasination of a what should have been one of the all time greatest teams ever. Before the game it hardly seemed likely. Italy had tied three times to reach the second phase and had just won it's first game. More than advance triumphantly they seemd to crawl through the back door. Rossi had yet to score a goal, not that anyone expected much, the little striker had just finished serving a two year suspension from professional soccer and had played but one month befor the Wrold Cup. Brazil on the other hand had been brilliant until then, as was expected, they were possibly the best team ever assembled. The silky smooth talent of Socrates, the incredible vesion of Zico combined with the explosive Falcao made for a team destined to greatness. It's great weakness a total devotion to offense that seemed to forget that caution is the better part of valor. In the game itself it seemed that Brazil offensive might would get the better of a much improved Italy, but like a wraith, better yet, like some mythical beast, Rossi appeared three times to mortally wound the Brazilians when they seemed the better team on field.

Are you talking about the CL match that ManUre won 4-3? THat was the only Real-ManUre match at old trafford and Raul was in the hospital getting his appendix removed.
What are you on about?

First of all, Scholes's hat trick against Newcastle at the end of last season deserves a mention
As for the best... eerrrr.... uuummm, it's 100% impossible to tell, probably anything from Baggio in the '94 WC... aahh screw it, nationalism time: it was Ray Houghton for getting revenge on the Italians in 1994 with his screamer when we beat Italy 1-0!! (remember the "only 2 teams beat Italy in the WC [Ireland/Brazil]... they both wore Umbro" ad?

Fowler's three minute hattrick vs Arsenal in '95 or maybe '96
Shearer and Sheringham's performances vs Holland in Euro '96

Kluivert, 24
Kluivert, 38
Kluivert, 51
Kluivert, 54
I'm not really a Kluivert fan, but watching Holland destroy Yugoslovia 6-1 in Euro 2000...well, I imagine if you're Dutch, it might have erased the Brasil match in WC '98 :)

You are half right... Scholes is not a striker... but you cant question the fact that Rivaldo is a striker... he also plays other positions but do you think he was in the midfield when he scored those 3 great, great goals... yes damnit he is a striker... I like Kluivert's game too... guys lets get specific with the performances... ok?

I have to agree with the Rivaldo v. Valencia game, but it was to clinch a CL spot not to win the league.

You know, I remember that game, but never saw the goals. So here's the question - anybody got a link to video?

yeah that rivaldo trick was awesome, i remember that match - all these are great, but i'm gonna have to be a homer ad say bergkamp for hOLLAND in the waning moments to beat argentina 2-1 (WC98 QF) - lord dennis souble taps a 50 yard F de boer long ball and pokes it by a stunned ayala and roa - what a lightning strike to the senses!!! i had a link to the video, if i find it ill post it here
