What pairs of players (they must currently be playing for the same national and/or club team) show a lot of chemistry on the pitch - communicate effectively, elevate and complement each others' games, etc.?

This is by no means a compehensive list, but some that occurred to me were:

Franck Ribery & Samir Nasri (France)
Diego & Torsten Frings (Werder Bremen)
Cristiano Ronaldo & Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Gennaro Gattuso & Andrea Pirlo (Italy & AC Milan)
Joe Cole & Didier Drogba (Chelsea)
Philipp Lahm & Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany & Bayern Munich)
Rio Ferdinand & Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
David Villa & David Silva (Spain & Valencia)
Cesc Fabregas & Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
Franck Ribery & Miroslav Klose (Bayern Munich)

Total opposites, but together they give you everything you'd want from central/deep midfield.

Indeed. I think Ballack and Frings (when healthy) are probably the only central midfield duo that work together to as great an effect as Pirlo and Gattuso do.

The Klose-Toni and Tevez-Rooney pairs surprised me. I thought that they would not mix well. They could not be on the same field together and one of them must sit.

Any 4 of the Barca striker can combine well, Ronaldinho, Henry, Messi and Eto'o. Personally I think when both Ronaldinho and Eto'o are fit they combine very well together. Then you have the class of Xavi behind them to supply them with the creative spark from midfield.

AC Milan also combine well when all on their game with Gattuso, Pirlo, Kaka and Seedorf all over the midfield. All good technically on the ball and with Gattuso you also have that dig and determination in the tackle to do well.

For the Dutch national team Wesley Sneidjer and Robin Van Persie are great to watch, both technically great with an eye for goal.

The Rooney and Tevez pertnership will get better I think, still adjusting just now, but with time they will prove to be good I think.

Any team with Juan Roman Riquelme in it can also combine well as that guy is sheer class and could link up with any1 especially in the Argentina team with the likes of Messi, Crespo, Veron, Cambiasso etc.

In their prime Claude Makelele and Patrick Vieira also combined well as a force in the middle of the park, added with the class of Zidane they had arguable the best 3 in the world in their midfield at 1 point.

England have a good defensive partnership at centre back with John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, both great defenders and with Ashley Cole on the left, are a right back away from a great all round defence, maybe Micah Richard in there and it is.

Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane (Tottenham) - nice partnership, especially during the last Premier League season.

Wesley Sneijder and Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid and Holland) - quite effective both for the club and the national team.

Per Mertesacker and Christoph Metzelder (Germany) - "das deutsche Bollwerk"

Richard Dunne and Micah Richards (Manchester City) - another solid defensive partnership, probably key to City's success so far.

They slowed down after the first few games. Basically, Sneijder was in good shape in the beginning of the season. Anyway, It was Guti who worked well with Sneijder. RVN and Raul worked well, but I would not conisder them the best in Europe.

True, although its less of a lot of combinations, quick touches, between the two, etc.; it's more Perrotta being able to make a smart run from midfield and Totti being able to find him. Example:

Roma are still the only team in Europe that is able to not play with a CF...IMO they are the team that play a style which is closest to the dutch's total football...with Roma's 6 midfielders and full backs contributing in major ways to attack as well as there CBs joining in (Mexes is very good at this)

Neither do Man Utd but I do understand the point you are making. The Roma system is quite superb and great to watch.

Let me rephrase that...Roma are the only team to play without a forward of any kind

Some more that definitely merit mentioning:

Miroslav Klose & Lukas Podolski (Germany & Bayern Munich)
Martin Petrov & Michael Johnson (Manchester City)
Joe Cole & Ashley Cole (England & Chelsea)
Fabio Cannavaro & Christoph Metzelder (Real Madrid)
