Is Rivaldo forever going to be remembered by his faking during the Brazil x Turkey match in Korea/Japan - probably the only taint in his entire career - than by what he's as a footballer - one of the best players of the last decade?

And please no comparisons with Maradona. The author of the Hand of God had plenty of other things to taint his career.

I allready forgot it. Who cares anyway; it happens everyday and this time it happens against the Turks and not vica versa, which is a notable fact.

I think Amado Guevara remembers. He probably falls asleep dreaming about it and laughing to himself.

No I dont think so..
Alpay is known as a mindless hothead who loses his cool regularly. So it was no suprise he booted the ball at rivaldo and got himself senf off.
Sure ,rivaldo exagerated the injury but alot of other players might've done the same thing.

Gentlemen,

I am a freelance genius, let me explain:

Rivaldo is a role model. Everything he does on the pitch, whether good or bad, gets mimicked by children who look up to him.

If Rivaldo dives and does not get disciplined properly, the next generation of footballers will think that gamesmanship of this kind comes as "part and parcel of the game", hence our beloved sport shall become even more of an improvised ballet.

There are a number of ways to approach this in the future:

1) Ban Rivaldo from playing for six months should he ever do it again.

2) If a ban doesn't work, someone on the pitch, perhaps the referee (a FIFA representative) should approach him on the ground and kick him repeatedly in the balls until he decides to get back up.

3) Send people off automatically for either signalling to get a player sent off or for falling like they've been taken out by a sniper.

All options are fair, and a special ruling should allow Maradona to experience all three at once, which will be fun - what a bastard.

i think the sad thing is that a player who has so much skill should resort to this kind of play acting...

this is the worlds biggest sporting event by a long shot and billions of people watched the world cup.

for a player to act like this, when so many people are watching, and to effectively get away with it is
a disgrace. He should have been red carded, not fined. What does $5,000 mean to a player who makes $100,000 a week.

Rivaldo has a lot of skill, but no character, and will never be remembered as a great player.

The problem is that it was an action without clear consiquence. As another poster expressed, he is a role model, and has a responsibility to show humility, compassion, and integrity on the field.

Had he been disciplined PROPERLY I don't believe we would be having this discussion. The problem is that he was not and he, along with all others who show lack of respect for the game, desicrated the sport. He took away from the beauty of the game. That is why I felt, and others felt, that he should be disciplined.

Rivaldo's reputation has suffered much more from his lack of impact at Milan than the Turkey incident.

This is what the world will remember Rivaldo for.

Rivaldo's biggest problem is his well-deserved reputation for mailing it in half the time he plays with a club. The fact that he tries so hard as a national team member only heightens the disparity. I think that he would probably be wise to go back to a big Brazilian club to "recharge" his competitive batteries, even if only for a one-season loan. As it is, he looks all out of sorts.

i don't think thats what he will be remembered for the most but saying that guys on my highschool soccer team who don't even watch games saw the clip on the news and make references to it. however he served his punishment so let it slide he is a good footballer (soccer player here in the states) and deserves to be remembered for the other things he has done.

Oookkaaaayyy...

Wrong. Rivaldo is class, and will be remembered as such. So he made one of the most comical dives in WC history. Big deal. That's nothing compared to the Mexican team.

Actually, how he ended up in Milan will impact his career/legacy. A Free transfer to Milan from Barcelona? There was no way Rivaldo could've have impacted the team. He was auxillary from the start. Who was he going to put on the Bench? AC Milan would've won the CL without Rivaldo.

I don't think its a big deal. Alpay deserved what he got, although Rivaldo shouldv'e done a better job falling. It was pretty funny though.

My opinion of Rivaldo actually went up after seeing that...
