im gonna be a coach for a team in the next coming months and i wanted to know how you guys decide on a team jersey, what do you base it on? so far we're KNVB, no ones really had a problem with it, but im sure the players would rather be something else.....does team jersey choice effect the players? im gonna be a first time coach for a team of 15-20 year olds so any advice is helpful about the team jersey decision....

Seriously...pick out what ever you like and tell the rest to take a flying leap if they don't like it. The best team I ever played on wore mismatched tee shirts, shorts and socks. When we stepped on the field to warm up, everyone thought we were a joke.... when we stepped off the field at the final whistle, everyone knew we were no joke at all!

Here is advice for you have fun. Have a deep desire to help your players that you have become better players. Everything else that comes after that is gravy.
You need home and away shirts. Have a unique shirt as your home shirt so you find yourselves being able to wear that shirt for most of your games home and away. That has to be the better qualkity shirt that is the one you spend most of your money on.
The away shirt that you will wear less can be of less quality so it costs you less money.
What you don't want is to have really cool looking shirts and play a bad game.
Dont let them wear there game shirts home or away to pracice.

Get something within the budget of the families. Get something you expect to last for 2 years.
As far as color, etc, provide quality coaching and it won't matter. And really, the last time it matters is about U7/U8 when the parents still think that is cute and want the kids to look their best.

Actually, color does matter. Find out what the other teams have so if possible you can avoid a conflict. Also, what's the weather like where you are during your season? If it's hot, avoid the darker colors that soak up the heat.

You might want to avoid shirts with two colours. I've seen one high school with shirts that are yellow on the front, black on the back. That doesn't help the officials too much and in effect doubles the number of potential colour clashes with opponents.

CT High School is actually changing. I believe it's not next year, but the year after. All tops need to be a solid single color. No stripes or patterns.

Also peripheral vision is not color vision--colors are seen as shades of gray. So close colors like orange-red and yellow-red appear very much the same and confused. A colored shirt and a white shirt gives you a better chance of avoiding problems in this area. I don't think patterns help recognition in the peripheral vision when players are moving, but that is just speculation.

What I meant is that you don't have to take a poll of all of the kids to see what color they want. You aren't going to reach consensus and as such, you don't have to let them have a say.
Team jerseys and names are really the last fun decisions a coach gets to make. After that it is all about lineups, playing time, etc. :D
