Bayern fans, I have a question regarding Lell. What type of player is he?

I haven't seen this player play, but I do read the game reports and check out the kicker ratings of players here and there. It seems that he has played consistently well for Bayern, at least according to Kicker ratings.

From what I've read on this site, on a couple of occassions Lell was cited by a number of posters as having played well even when the team came up with a stinker. One sign that a player is good is when he plays well even when the the team as a whole doesn't.

In terms of the German National team, Lahm is the go to guy at left back, but what about right back? It's Fritz or Friederich that gets talked about, but it's Lell who plays for Bayern.

So what type of player is Lell? Strengths weaknesses? Potential?

Thanks.

well lets say he is currently playing a season noone expected of him. He had some pretty poor games last season but maybe ppl underestiminated the effect of Bayerns overall weak performance on younger players like him. He is also for sure not the most talented guy out there but he obviously gives everything in every game.
He is not a modern RB in the way that he plays not very offensive but he is stable in the defence.
Overall its hard to give a judgement about him. He is far away from the german NT, thats for sure (there are Fritz, Castro, A. Friedrich, Jansen, Lahm, Tasci, Pander and even young talents like J. Boateng ahead of him). Currently everyone sees him only as 4th FB, behind Lahm, Sagnol and Jansen and thats why i doubt that he has a future at Bayern. As soon as all 3 of them are fit he will prolly sit on the bench.
So if he really wants to play regularly he would need to go but for Bayern its ofc a great thing to have such a backup.

I think Lell has made incredible progress this season. Last season he showed some of his potential but didn't get too much playing time and, like almost all players, was quite inconsistent.

This season however, filling in for the injured Sagnol and Lahm, he has done brilliantly. Lell, in his career, has played in every defensive position and even in midfield. Thats a testament to his qualities as a player, I see him as a very well rounded footballer who has few weaknesses. He is the type of player that you can rely on and gets better and more confident with every game. As a FB, especially in the modern game, he isn't particularly strong going forward when compared to the likes of Willy and Lahm, but he makes up for it with his level headed style and physical presence. He might not look like a big guy, but he imposes his physicality on the opposing players every game he plays.

I say he deserves to be called up to the NT. I don't know how long Friedrich has left as Germany's RB and Fritz is quite inconsistent as of late and has been dealing with injuries. Being 4th choice at Bayern when everyone is fit doesn't work to his advantage but I'd like for Bayern to hold on to him because he has a lot to bring to the team.

he's been quite consistent this season, much moreso than last season

i remember he played really well at milan last year in the 2-2 tie; but then followed it up with a stinker

The thing is, Jansen has appeared to be first choice over Friedrich since the World Cup, meaning that Lahm's position will be on the right flank, not the left. So on the bench ahead of Lell you'd have Friedrich, a very similar (and superior) player.

So I don't think it would be appropriate to call Lell, or any other RB, up unless they are demonstrably superior to the current back-up RB, Friedrich.

Well my statement was geared more towards the long run. I don't know how long Friedrich will be called up anymore and Lell has been very consistent as of late. Lell would be an ideal backup for the starting fullbacks.
