Yay! I think this is good news. I was uncomfortable with the thought of selling AJ while keeping Yak.

Very good news. We've potentially got our strikers for the future set.

Wasn't he signed til 2011?
And he was getting paid around 2 million pounds a year. How has he justified his pay raise?
Just to clarify, I am happy he's signed but I think there are more pressing issues other than extending AJ's contract, like signing Pienaar permanently, and what to do with the expiring contracts of Carsley, Wessels, and Stubbs.

That should keep the "homesick for London" rumors at bay for, oh, a couple days.

I figure thats the biggest reason why he's signed.
I figure Moyes also thinks that these rumors have been affecting his play lately. Which is why he's only scored 1 goal competitively since March.

Heard he's also got a 5K a week payraise...
hmm

And you think a silly thing like a contract is going to slow the feral beast that is the English press?
Silly bear. :p

:D
I wasn't saying about the press itself (unless Johnson is that fickle!) but it goes to show that Everton just want him here. That being said, I really don't think he deserves the payraise!

I don't see why everyone's jumping AJ's back all of a sudden. He gave us great service last season, and a slump is no reason to throw him to the wolves.
Where's the ********ing loyalty?

everton fans need some reason to be pessimistic, apparently it's AJ's turn. :(
he helped spark our offense last year and get us into europe... the fact he's been injured most of this season, and his little "slump" occured during that time is no reason to be down on the guy. he seems to be showing his loyalty and he sure as hell works hard for the team. maybe he wasn't the priority signing, but he was the most eager to and therefore the first one to... maybe the others are holding out for some reason.
let's just be happy that he is (apparently) not going anywhere, which gives us another option on the bench that is a GOOD THING.

So you're saying he deserves a 5 year deal on a deal that was already in place to 2011????

I'm not arguing this. I agree with everything here.

Yes, I am. He's been a loyal Blue and a hard worker - and certainly the kind of guy I want on my team.

i think that you only need to be upset he was signed even longer than 2011 if the people you mentioned DON"T get signed and we lose them. tying up loose ends is always a good thing and it gets it out of the way for when the real nitty gritty discussions take place.
i think i've mentioned once or twice how much i like AJ :p so this news makes me happy and that's all we need to know for now. Let's not get mad about stuff that may or may not happen when we don't know the whole situation. maybe moyes just wanted to make it clear that he likes, admires and wants AJ on the team. it's a very strong point being made and one that I'm (again) happy about. How AJ and Yak will fit together doesn't seem to be a problem in my mind because frankly they have different strengths, I think that may just complement the other.

And Carsley and Stubbs aren't? They are older granted, but their contracts are expiring and they are true Blues as well. People are misconstruing me as to saying I don't want Johnson at our club, but thats simply not true
And just to clarify, no I don't think Johnson deserves to get a payraise either.

I think that if Stubbs and Carsley can continue to be useful, then they should get their contracts renewed.

the issue of their contracts is completely separate from AJ's contract. We have no information on what is being discussed, which sides are slowing down talks, if talks are even underway or any of that. I don't think it's fair to bring those issues up when this is a happy thread.
I am not misconstruing, I'm just trying to show that the two issues are not hinged upon each other in my mind. no i'm not happy that a few boys are (seemingly) not getting the contracts upped, but that doesn't mean i'll be upset when another one DOES get it... how about being happy about AJ for a few minutes and then say "right next up we have ____ let's get him re-signed as well!" Maybe a lot of the AJ re-sign reasons have to do with quashing rumors. plus he's got a lot of free time on his hands to talk and negotiate, he's not out practising and playing every day (BOO! :() maybe that's all there is to it.

stubbs and carsley will sign at the end of the season, i think the club feels there is not much high demand with teams lining up around the block for a 38 year old central defender when pace and scoring ability from set pieces are what coaches are looking for. i love stubbsy cause he keeps eveyone in place and controls the game. as for carsley, it's either stay here with a team looking destined for europe year after year or go to motherwell or some other shit team. once again i just don't see teams lining up for him that have what we don't. now if the aj rumors were true, snatching him up for as long as possible i see as a fine move. pay raise or not, i see him getting it done for years to come. he also seems like the type of player that sees that pay raise, and feels like he has to go out there and prove he was worth it. gotta get him out there first though!!
