I really think there's something to be said for the dick vs. heart/brain argument.

There is. Of course the Beatles started out as a bunch of Teddy Boys. Brian Epstein cleaned them up and made them safe for public consumption. I think John Lennon never got over them selling out and it's why he went deliberately out of his way to trash anything associated with Beatles myth-making after they broke up. However, I don't think the Stones ever could have gotten away with their bad boy image if a cleaned up and sanitized for your protection Beatles hadn't paved the way for the bands that followed them.

BTW - Peabody - it's your honor to come up with a new thread title, but do so quickly, as this topic is sure to garner many more posts. :D

Completely caught off guard. Here's my best attempt on such short notice...

I think you could probably say that about nearly all bands today. I know people who cried when they saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Not something that happens every day.

It's hard not to get into a "who's better" discussion since this started as a "who's more relevant today" discussion.

I think there are a few bands that brought about a significant change in music and it greatly benefited other bands. It is always hard to tell the impact though.

And I don't really think one is better than the other.
