View Full Version : Claudio Reyna

With Ronaldinho going to Barcelona and Manchester Utd. still looking for a playmaker or just looking to strengthen their midfield. Sunderland is in bad financial shape and will probably be looking to sell Reyna. Whatever team gets him will most likely get a good deal on him since he's coming off an injury. He can play in the middle or outside of the midfield which seems to be the types of players Man U is going after (Ranaldinho, Duff) so does anyone think they'd seriously consider buying Claudio Ryena?

Hell no... Reyna is nothing like Duff, Ronaldinho... He couldn't cut it for Man U, maybe in his younger days he could play for them, but right now he'd never make it out the reserves...

IMHO, you're underestimating Reyna. He's no winger although he can play there when needed. He's a very good holding midfielder who can add some creativity and defend soundly while controling the flow of the game. I'd say he's closer to Roy Keane or Gary Neville player than a Ronaldinho player, but he's not really either.
IMHO, he's already better than Nicky Butt in every way except his passport. Nobody has really questioned Butt's ability to play at Man U when Keano is injured or suspended. In fact, Keano has gone on record as saying to Sir Alex that if he ever had a chance to get Claudio Reyna, he'd be one of the few that Keano would wholeheartedly recommend buying. Apparently Americans aren't the only ones who think Captain America can play at OT.

Do you have a link for that? I love Reyna, but I just don't see him at OT.

Reyna looks decent for the American national team. I don't think that would translate into a valuable addition for Manchester Utd. Besides, I fail to see what he brings to the table that other players don't already have. Even when he wasn't injured at Sunderland, he didn't exactly dominate play.
Keane and Veron, certainly, are superior in every area. Butt's a better holding midfielder, and the attempts to turn Reyna into an AMC don't look to have succeeded (although Reyna is a better passer).
TBH, I'd rather see Darren Fletcher get extra time. If anybody from the USMNT could help Man Utd, it would probably be Beasley or possibly Donovan. I'd be skeptical of either of those, however, as well.

mmmm.........isnt he American?
Better than Butt, I think not. Nicky Butt is a very good player. True he may not be as good as Gerrard. He is a good player and served United well. Hes a good holding player, allowing those around to play. He showed what he is capable of in the World Cup to everyone, not just United fans.

Are you asking if Keane is American? Or Digital? If Keane, that's just sad.

It was inferred that only Americans think that Reyna could play at OT. By bringing up Keano, he Digital proved that statement false since Keane is Irish. Its like doing a proof in geometry, if one line if off, then everything else is wrong.

Uh, I was talking about Lancashire Lad - trying to get from him if he honestly didn't know Keane was Irish, because that's just lame. I knew what Digital meant.
Just thought there might be a slight chance LL was refering to Digital, thus setting up the premise that because Digital is American, even his referencing of an Irishman's alleged statement might be suspect, ie, exagerrated or not verifiable (linkable).
That said, I was never good at geometry.

I wasnt referring to either of them. I was referring to Reyna, since he is American. You surely cant believe that I dont know keane is irish.
Could someone provide me the reference to Keane talking to Reyna.

It just that Reyna does his best in a central midfield role, where he his primary role is to keep shape and distribute. He lacks the defensive bite to play at d-mid and the true speed or flair to play attacking mid. IF we got him, that is where he would have to play.

Anyway, he is suppose to be heading to Blackburn to replace Dunn.

1. Reyna was on the all-world cup team primarily because of the US's shock success. Brad Friedal was a more important player, but didn't make it because of Oliver Kahn. McBride and Donovan played nearly as well. Still, I think the award was mostly a "wow, the US did really well... hmm, Reyna seems like a good candidate" sort of thing.
2. Butt was Pele's pick as the best player during the World Cup.
3. Veron did have a poor World Cup. However, being the most important player on the Serie A champion side, imo, shows a bit more class. Harder to succeed over a grueling, long season than in a few short games.
Reyna's a quality player. But he wouldn't really add anything at Man Utd.

You know, 2 years ago, I would have said that Reyna is every bit as good as Veron (controlling the tempo, dribbling, passing, defending). The only reason he did not get a look earlier was because he was an American. No one wants a star American on their football team, it would make everyone else look bad. But now he is too old and too injury prone to add anything to a quality ManU side. Then again, Veron doesnt add much either.

I do not have a link, but I have both read it online and heard it mentioned on TV, so there must be some people out there who can verify it. I first heard about it around the time Reyna was leaving Rangers and eventually ended up at Sunderland. But it was prior to his injury.
I disagree about Nicky Butt, I strongly feel that Reyna's effect on a game is profound and that he's better than Butt. If you want proof, just look at Sunderland's record with and without Reyna. They actually did OK with him, despite not having any contribution from Phillips. Once he went down, so did Sunderland. Just a little FYI, but at the time of Reyna's injury guess who the top two leaders in the Premiership were with % of passes completed ... Keane and Reyna. Neither of them is an attacking midfielder, but both are quite responsible with the ball.

BUT
Just a little FYI, but at the time of Reyna's injury guess who the top two leaders in the Premiership were with % of passes completed This is an impressive stat if true. And maybe playing with Howard wouldn't be so bad for my Man U soccer fan view point.
