Steve Holroyd has brought up a very good point. What if, despite it's history in the city and our desire to use the name, the owner of the San Jose Max Attendance 12,000 won't let us use the proper name of his baseball team which has been gone from this city for 50 years. First, there should be a statute of limitations which prohibits profiting on a dead brand ad infinitum, but seeing as though no precedent has been set, maybe we should prepare a plan B.

This is to seek nominations for the 2nd favorite team name behind Philadelphia Athletic.

Philadelphia Independence
Keystone Athletic
AC Philadelphia
FC Pennsylvania
Chester Athletic
Philadelphia Blues (our mascot would be Muddy Waters - just like the Delaware)
Football Union of Philadelphia (that's right, FU Philadelphia)
Union FC
Independence FC

I like them all. Union FC, Independence FC, and the Philadelphia Blues are especially my favorite.

I thought that given our favorite colors it would probably be Philadelphia FC, "The Blues". And then I tried to link the Blues and a river, and Muddy Watters was the first thing I thought of. The master who brought us Mojo Working, Champagne and Reefer, and Hoochie Coochie Man.

I really like Union FC, too... Not sure if I've ever heard it before. Who came up with that?

Could there be a problem with this name, considering the initals are UFC? Wouldn't there be a bunch of Ultimate Fighters rather upset with us? I mean, I'd be able to take six or seven of them, but with Davey employing the "Curl into a ball and cry" defense method, I still don't like our chances....

More importantly, though, don't they already have that copyrighted?

If Athletic can't be used, SC is voted down, AC and FC are both shot down then I like Philadelphia Independents. Kind of a lame pun but gets away from the whole singular nickname thing that I don't care for.

AC Philadelphia as stated before.

The two defenses seem very similiar how ever the goats miss the key defacation stage that makes daveys defense so much stronger.

Philadelphia Blues has a nice ring to it--classy, classical (i.e., not something with x or z in it, or a singular nickname), yet not shamelessly European.

It also is pretty poignant, given what has happened to several Philadelphia Police officers in the past few days.

And, no--St. Louis cannot sue. It is city + nickname that makes the mark, not simply one or the other.

Too similiar to Chelseas nickname for me.

I liked the arsenal idea, Philadelphia independance, and just call us the independants like the gunners

I am voting for Athletic first and foremost, but I actually do like the ring of Philadelphia Blues, its not that bad.

With Blues as a nickname of Philadelphia FC or Philadelphia Blues FC?

I'm not big on the Philadelphia Blues thing. I think people would be trying to figure out why the "Blues" nickname was given. The Philadelphia Sound was synonymous with Soul music, which the AFL team already took, so it couldn't be a musical connection.

If we wanted to call them the "Blues," I would rather it be something that came about on its own, not the given nickname.

I was thinking the same thing. TSOP was certainly not blues. But if that is our preferred color it may happen organically, and be embraced differently than if it were the official name. I don't feel the same love toward the Sky Blues. If press releases from the club ask the media to not use FC, but to let it be understood, I think we would be going a long way towards a organic nickname rather than being painted into a corner with TFC or FCD.

Yeah, I suppose it would be better to have the nickname originate, but I was also curious as to how we could get it to come about that way, as I read 2-3 articles where idiot reporters referred to DC United as The United's, instead of dropping "the". I guess if the FO could ask for the media to refer to them as "The Blues" that would be sweet and we could have a more soccer specific name i.e. Philadelphia AC, SC, FC.
