This was brought up on another thread and I think this is an interesting idea. What do you think about a new team using the Mets stadium for a few years until a SSS is built? Its only gonna be a 45,000 seater so the atmosphere would be pretty solid. I suppose that is isnt out of the question since the Giants and Jets both used to play in NY baseball stadiums.

Would not be bad - not sure if the Mets would allow it though - seasons run at the same time - scheduling would be tough

Yea that would be the tricky part, moving around the Mets schedule.

I thought that the new stadium is being built next to the old stadium. So I do not think this will work.

Yea the new stadium is Citifield. Shea is going to be the parking lot.

Thanks. Would a soccer field fit in it.
They try that at Minute Maid Park and the field just looked weird. The fans were so far away from the pitch it was not even worth being there.

No prob, well its gonna be an intimate stadium(only 45,000)from the looks of it,it might be a little far away from the field but we'll see.Even if they were just to use it for a year or two until a SSS was built.

my take on this:
1)i wouldn't imagine that the league would be down for this idea being that they've mandated all future new teams have a plan for their own SSS.
2)baseball markings on the pitch is not that much of a step up from grid iron football marking. i doubt that would appeal to the "minds" in the league office. (i know this can be petty, but isn't everyone always critical of mls teams playing on surfaces that look anything but a soccer pitch.)
3) 45K for mls matches is kinda shooting the moon. right now the league dosen't have a big enough fan base to fill in stadiums that big. it would be a lesser version of playing in giants stadium.
Maybe for a year, year and a half this could work but anything past that dosen't seem to be worth it.

This is why new baseball fields do not work for soccer.

Why not just modify Shea Stadium for a soccer field!

They want to knock it down and put the parking area there,it would be nice though.

Yeah I know. But if wilpon is serious maybe this could be an option.

That would be great, you never know. I forgot how the lay of the land looks but maybe they can fit the lot in another area.If seen a few cities that have 2 major stadiums right next to each other, although at this moment they are slipping my mind lol. Anywhere in Flushing Meadows would be nice.

This season both stadiums were in place and parking was as it always has been. So that being said its quite possible that it can co exist.

Actually they were urging people to take public transportation b/c Citifield is in the place of the old lot(thousands of spaces). But maybe something can be worked out,it would be sick if the stadium was right there. Cmon Mr. Wilpon!!!

That's what I was thinking. They could keep Shea open for the soccer team, but in a smaller configuration (remove the upper deck) and replace the diamond with a true soccer field. The Mets wouldn't be affected then (save for the loss of parking) and games could be arranged so both teams aren't playing at the same time. They could always build a parking garage to make up for the loss of parking spaces (that's what they want to do here in Houston).

The more I think of this the more I think it might happen. In NYC you cant implode building when you take them down so they have to do it piece by piece.Taking off the upper deck and closing up the outfield with stands wouldnt be a bad idea. Redo the outside and maybe we have something. They are fixing up the entire area around Shea so they will be able to make room for extra parking lots.It wont take them that long to do,it would be a hell of alot quicker then knocking the whole thing down and building it back up.Also I will always know that im sitting in the original Shea, which will give me peace of mind lol.

That's exactly what I thought when I found out that they werent going to implode Shea. (i wanted to see it live. I have a view from my house that matches no other.) Then the news about BOCA USA came out and that Wilpon was interested in MLS. So then I started to imagine a dual stadium venture in which Shea was reconfigured for soccer and NYC finally gets its team.

That was a damn good idea Torero, gotta rep you for that one lol. Also how great would it be(ateast for me as a Mets fan)if both teams made the playoffs. I would go to the day Mets game at Citifield and then run over to the soccer stadium to watch us beat the Bulls ;).
