DUFF HOPING FOR UNITED ESCAPE ROUTE
By Alan Nixon
DAMIEN DUFF is stalling on a £17million move to Chelsea because he is hoping Manchester United come in with a last-minute bid to take him.
Blackburn's bewildered winger met with Chelsea officials at Stamford Bridge yesterday to talk about a double-your-money deal with Roman Abramovich's super-rich club.
However, Duff has told friends that he is going to hold off from signing for as long as he can because he thinks United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could also mount a move for him at the same price.
It seems unlikely as United are chasing other targets such as Ronaldinho and Kleberson - but Duff is not convinced that he fancies London.
Duff is settled in Lancashire and likes the quiet life. He has told Rovers team-mates of his concerns and word has reached Old Trafford that he could still be pinched.
Chelsea will give Duff some time to think over the move and it will not be down to simply hitting him with more and more money. Duff would even join United for less.
Duff has claimed the £17million fee is "a ridiculous price on my head".
"It is a stupid price with the way the game has gone," he said. "But at the end of the day, it is all about money with football directors." Abramovich has turned down the chance to sign Dutch World Cup star Edgar Davids because Juventus demanded they take Marcelo Salas as well.
Juventus president Luciano Moggi is so desperate to off-load injury-plagued Chilean striker Salas that he was prepared to sacrifice Davids in an £18million joint deal. Instead, Salas now looks set to join Argentine club side River Plate.
Agent Pini Zahavi insisted Chelsea were only interested in a straight cash deal for Davids.

Ferguson is a sly one. Do you think he's not budging on the Roni offer cause he still has cash tucked away to swoop for Duff as well? Hmmm....

Not a Man U. fan, but I was wondering the same...does a move for Duff mean they move Giggs?? Or does one of them play inside or at the withdrawn forward/A-Mid type role?? As a Rovers fan, I would hate to see Duff go, period. However, I would rather he move to Man U for the sheer fact that they aren't solely winning on the players they have bought...like Chelsea is doing.
It's almost like the difference between the Yankees and the Mets. The Yankees get some good Free Agents, but then you mix in minor league products like Soriano, Jeter, Posada, etc. The Mets just throw their money at anything with a bat...

Just thought I would clear that up...I guess Duff goes to the right then?? Assuming Ron doesn't come over as well?

Duff is far better on the left. He can play on the right, but it would mean his rampaging runs will be curtailed somewhat. I do get a sneaky feeling he's holding out for a move to Man Utd. Then we'll sign him back in a few years time, and he'll great for us again, just like Berg.
Personally speaking, I think Keane needs to be replaced soon. He is starting to look slightly creaky by his high standards, and the violent fouls.........sorry the firm tackles are catching up with him.

Duff is equally adept on both sides as his display vs Spain in WC02 demonstrates where he played on the right and tore them to shreds time and time again.
Lets give Keane some time and then make the judgement..He was just thrown into the thick of it last year and had no time to recover. He'll have a whole pre-season behind him this time round so maybe he'll be back to somewhere near the old keano

Uhhh yeah.... Chelsea have bought all their success unlike Man U. Lets see Veron was free wasnt he? Ruud was free too if I remember right. Or how about Barthez. And how much are they offering for Ronaldinho?
Even if Chelsea sign Duff in addition to Bridge, Johnson and Geremi they will have hardly spent any more than Man U did on Veron alone.
Sure Man U dont spend like Real, but they spend quite a lot of money themselves.

Giggs, Scholes, the Nevilles, Beckham, and Butt were all part of the youth system. I know there are more, who am I forgetting?
