A friend, who never paid much attention to soccer, got hooked by watching the WC in June. He asked if I watched MLS between World Cups or some other leagues.

I told him that I really only watch the Chicago Fire in the MLS; other matches I may glance at but I don't usually set the VCR for non Fire MLS matches.

On the other hand, I tape 3 to 5 MFL matches each weekend and watch as many as I can before the next weekend of play. I support Chivas but also enjoy watching several other teams (Necaxa, Toluca, Tigres) on a regular basis.

I'll also watch English Premier League matches at the pubs on Sunday morning if it's a good matchup and finally, my cable company is making FSW available so I'll get to see more EPL matches each week again.

ANyway, my friend wondered how I could best describe the Mexican League style of play. My friend is aware that Serie A is very slow & defensive oriented and the EPL is played at breakneck speed for the most part.

How would you folks describe the Mexican League style of play, overall?

Also, he wondered, which European League corresponds the most to the Mexican League (not in quality of play, but in style of play)?

Any words to pass along to my friend?

By the way, he also wants to adopt a Mexican team if he enjoys watching MFL play but he wants an exciting attacking team. Which would you suggest (please don't pick your favorite team for him just because they're your favorite - they must be an attacking squad)?

The Mexican Football League is South American style football. It is obvious with all the players and coaches that are in the MFL. Tecos has the Peruano Uribe, Monterrey has Passarela of Argentina ect. Each of these teams also have five to six South Americans players. So there is no doubt where Mexican football influence comes from.

Now there is no particular school of football that is played. It is a mixture of all the diffrent South American styles. The tactics world wide now are all the same so there is nothing diffrent there.

I would say La Liga. MFL teams are right up there with their mid table teams. We have nothing that can Compare to a Real Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona. However Clubs like Cruz Azul, Necaxa and Morelia are definetely better than Osasuna, Valladolid ect..

Cruz Azul is allways a fan favorite as is Morelia.

I'm glad JTorres asked this -- I've just started watching MFL last year and was curious about the different styles the teams employ. I really like Oscar Perez (I'm a keeper myself) and really want to root for Cruz Azul -- are they really an attacking team VS? I've watched some America (Americrap, according to VS) games both during El Copa Libertadores and MLF season and was impressed by their attacking -- am I wrong, VS? What about Chivas? How would you characterize their style of play Various Styles?

They sure are an attacking team.. Last season Sebastian Abreu was the MFL leading goalscorer.
This season they fortified their attack with Palencia and the Argentine Messera.

What about Chivas? How would you characterize their style of play Various Styles?

Chivas style of play is more Heart than football. We have a very young squad and the Club hasnt had any signifacant trasnfers. That said, they always leave everything they have on the field.

The Coach likes the team to make pressing in the midfield and then initiate quick counters down the wing's. He uses Morales as creative midfielder with the two forwards playing far from each other therefore combining with the midfielders and not each other. Yep definately a Counterattacking team.

I remember an Argentine coach, could of been Lavolpe commenting that Mex. didn't know how properly cover defensively like Argentines do. Unexisting defensive pressure at opposition's side of the field and physical distance were the charges. That theory has died down ever since Mex teams have repeatedly advanced to later stages of Copa Lib.. Most importantly MFL's unflashy style is like watching MLB, your almost convinced you can do the same thing a player just did.
