i'm an assistant for the Jv team at my former high school, and i need some drills that focus on passing, defending, attacking.this is my first time being an assistant, so i dont have that much experienced at coaching. also the head coach for Jv( my ex coach) doesn't really coach the team, he makes the players do the same 4 drills that i did my first year at jv, which are not good. so i would like to get some new drills so that the team can become better. regarding the players skill, most are 1st year players, while we do have some better ones.

Here's my lesson plan for my U11 girls this season. Should be good for building a foundation. Post #12 and #15

There are some good threads on this topic. Be sure to read "your best drills" from April 2007. It is an open discussion with a lot of good ideas.

As you don't have much coaching experience and it sounds like the old coach is a poor mentor, I'd recommend doing a little reading. I've been coaching for awhile, but I've been blown away at what I've learn by watching a good experienced coach and reading some good resources.

When you have the foundation of what you need to look for in a team and player at every level of play it can really help you out when planning practices. Here's a few resources I've found helpful:

US Soccer's Best Practice for Coaching - http://images.ussoccer.com/Documents/cms/ussf/Best_Practices.pdf

A great overview of how to develop players from the early ages to the later years. No specific drills, but it will give you a good background and help you when choosing what drills are approprate.

The Official FA Guide to Basic Team Coaching - http://www.falearningshop.com/TheFASite/product/MenuLeft1%5FFA+Coaching+Products/B16007.htm and http://www.soccer.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=1&pcount=&Product_Id=198774&Key_id=&SearchQuery=FA%20guide%20and%20basic%20team%20coaching

You may think you don't need something that has "Basic" in the title, but I've been pleasantly surprised by this title. I love the chapter on the characteristics of a successfully team and the questions to ask players after an doing a specific drill or exercise are pure gold.

E Certificate or D License - Check with you local club to find a time to get certified. These classes not only give you drills, exercises, and games you can take straight to your practice, but you learn a ton about how to be a better coach and get feedback on your coaching. Not to mention, a license might help you take over as head coach if/when the current coach leaves.

This forum - Keep coming back posting ideas and problems. Take everything with a grain of salt, because there is no solution that works for every team with every coaching style.

Finally, learn to bite your tongue. The head coach might not be that great, but he is the "boss". He is going to do things you don't like, but respect him, especially around the team. Learn to be diplomatic with your questioning and always stay positive.

Good luck and have fun!
