well, we're out of the pokal...
da Silva missed his penalty and Jena made all of theirs...
I saw the highlights. Unfortunately, da Silva slipped on his kick......

Bummer, that last minute goal was unnecessary. I'd have loved to finally win the Cup this year...I guess we'll have to wait another 12 months ;)
Congrats to Jena, but I'm depressed for now...

Great.... just great! All I'll say is I'm glad I didn't have to go through watching this match. Maybe there's a crazy logic to not showing these matches in North America!

They don't show the games in Europe either, only the Munich derby tomorrow. You're prolly lucky you didn't get to see it though.
I could've seen the highlights but opted out of it, i've now come home from a night of 'frustsaufen', i'm coming to terms with it but i'm still really sad. For me, a trip to the cup final would've made this entire crap season worth it. Now this dream is impossible, and all due to our own stupidity: hitting the post(Basturk on another ********ing one-on-one), then letting in a goal, then the boys showed class to fight back, and were crusing to victory in the end, before a stupid lack of concentration(all I can say is: AGAIN) in defense alllowed Jena to come back in. After that, it's all history, all we needed was for Toni da Silva to unluckily slip in the run-up and screw up the PK. We can't blame it on him though, penalties are a coin-toss, and he shouldn't be blamed for the loss, that's just how these things work. I heard Ulreich unfortunately messed up big-time on the 2-2, though again this is just what i've heard, I didn't watch highlights. That's a shame - but we must keep faith in this guy - he's very young for a keeper and was solid for us up until then. We must give him more time, never consider benching him straight away.
so we really shouldn't search for scapegoats such as Ulreich or da Silva. If there's a scapegoat, it's the entire side for failing to take their opponents seriously enough, despite the fact that their previous cup results would've deserved our respect.
I'm crushed, I really didn't see this happening. all we can do now is play our Bundesliga games, forget about any glory, and try to muscle our way into the top 5-6, so that we can be around in Europe come next season.
i'm completely out of it after this loss guys :( , but all we can do is look forward, and hopefully the team will be showing the form of the derby-win again, by the time we play Energie on Saturday :(

Actually, both of tonight's matches, Wolfsburg v. HSV and Bayern v. 1860 are televised.
And I must say again I really respect how you guys are handling the loss. I know I would not be so classy about it were it my team.
Much respect to you guys.

As a Stuttgart fan, I would probably be more angry than frustrated. Given the imbalance in talent, the only way this can really happen is a lack of effort and/or professionalism. I very much would include Armin Veh here, as he obviously didn't make enough out of his (comparably) plentiful resources. For example regarding goalkeepting: From all I've seen so far, Ulreich is not (cannot be at his age!) a better overall goalkeeper than Schäfer despite the latter's blunders.
Skimming the headlines, I see Sportbild thinks Stuttgart is undeserving of Gomez.

I can't agree. It is still easy to see that Stuttgart goes on the pitch each match day with a solid plan and are well organized. Some of the players just don't seem to be able to finish.
This is unlike teams like FCN, who did finally replace their coach. Meyer sent them out with a plan, yes, but never seemed to push them to execute. And also Dortmund, who usually look like there is no organization and the coach seems to only know how to play two formations and seems determined to stick with just one of those.
Unlike these guys, Veh tries to adjust. His problem is expectations are too high. People just won't accept the notion that VfB were largely lucky last season and that this isn't last season anymore.

Yes, but when your coach and your team loses confidence in the more "established" player, you make the switch.
As I stated earlier in this thread, I backed Schaefer when he signed with VfB, but had no idea he would be this bad.
Do I think Schaefer might have made the mistake Ulreich did last night? YES!

I wouldn't care. Everyone knows SportBild is simply Germany's largest Bayern fan magazine.....

Yes, and I wouldn't care if I didn't agree that Gomez should be in the Champions League or in the Uefa Cup at least...

That is not for you or SportBild to decide. He has a valid contract with VfB which he was happy to extend earlier this season. He has chosen to go as VfB goes.
Now if he demands to be allowed to leave, that is something different.
His and VfB's call, not yours or SportBild's.
Shit man, if SportBild had their way, every good, young German player would be obligated to join Bayern.....

I never read SportBild, that's just asking for trouble.
We can still qualify for the uefa cup, all we need is a top 6 finish, which is still manageable if we find our form.
i think Gomez will stay with us atleast one more season, he has never shown any intention of hoping to leave this summer.
I can't blame Veh, he's done everything for this club, and he's already pulled us out of multiple crises, in a freak result like yesterday it's not the coach you blame, but the players.

Stuttgart made Gomez. He went through their youth ranks to become what he is today. So if anyone deserves him it is Stuttgart. Of course it'll be tough for a team like Stuttgart to keep a player of his quality, but "deserving" has nothing to do with it.

I have to take issue with that
Obviously there was luck involved, winning the championship. But Stuttgart also played just very good. Bremen and Schalke were too stupid to cash in on their qualities, but Stuttgart was definitely up there quality wise.
I think what's going on this year is actually quite similar to Hamburg last year. First there were lots of injuries, then the new signings didn't have an impact at all and now there is a mental problem. Last year, when the opponent scored first, I simply knew that we'd come back. The confidence was there. This year, you can sense that the players feel uncertain of themselves.
But all is not lost. And at times we showed our potential. We are for example the only team so far who was able to beat Bayern this season. And not only that, but we did so in style.

I wouldn't go that far, he already was considered a great talent at Ulm before he joined Suttgart.
It's the same as saying Gladbach "made" Marin or Bayern "made" Kroos when imo Frankfurt and Rostock had as much to with it as has talent obviously.
Agree about the rest, Stuttgart played beautiful football last seaon and deserved to win the title. This season shows just how important the mental aspect of the game is.
The pressure is higher, they are not riding that wave of euphoria anymore and things are becoming harder.
Still, the talent is there and I believe they will reach an UEFA cup berth.

Agree with all that except here. Last year was last year, I will not discuss about it, but they just don't have the consistency to make it there. They're not consistent defensively (Hertha game stands out), they're midfield besides Hitzlsperger is missing and Marica and Cacau are just not good enough atm...
They can still make it, but losses at home to teams like Hertha and Jena....

And that did that get you? Bonus points? Confidence?
3 points.
It's not like you get some bonus for beating Bayern.
I expected someone to take issue with my opinion, but injuries haven't been VfB's only "problem' this season.
You guys screwed with your chemistry too much. You guys may not have lost many players, but you lost the cohesiveness they had last season.
Yes, you guys are very good, but I stand by my comment that last season, you were largely lucky and you sure as hell had help.
I think not only was the chemistry lost, but you guys have simply come back to earth.
You had your dream season. Welcome back to reality.

Actually, as I said before, I think that confidence is key.

I didn't credit the poor season to the injuries. But I compared it to Hamburg last year. First there were many injuries, then the transfers were not very good and then we lost the first couple of games. Confidence went down and with that team chemistry is also burdened. I mean if you lose games, the guy that didn't run enough in your eyes suddenly is responsible for you and lazy, when before he was a nice guy. And then you don't play for each other anymore. So it's kind of a downward spiral.
And that's why I mentioned the victory against Bayern. Because if we manage several games like that in a row, we can break through that spiral. And the Bayern game showed that we're capable of that.

Tomorrow's game in Cottbus has been called off due to high winds:
http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/artikel/375699/
We're gonna have to play the game at a later time. This pisses me off, now we're going to be behind everyone else in terms of games and we'll look further off the pace than we actually are, which could further damage our confidence. If we lose to Bremen next week, we're gonna have a VERY tough time of trying to catch up to the European spots. Just typical.
But then again, there is nothing one can do about the weather :( , and I guess it is safety theat matters above everything else.

And your guys get more time to rest. Hopefully, it will be rescheduled like another European match. On Wednesday before a Saturday game or on Thursday before a Sunday game.

Yeah. It can't be next week though since Cottbus's stadium is getting a new pitch. So it would have to be after the Bremen game. So, I guess it'll be in about 2 weeks.
I have to say though that it's always annoying for mewhen games get rescheduled and just screw up a calender imo. I feel bad for the supporters who have tickets to tomorrow's game from whom things will be complicated now. But, again, it's safety first.

Can somebody explain why things are dangerous that safety concerns have postponed the match? It sounds like it was somehow weather related, but this was the only game affected.
Thanks.
