We just drew Jena in the cup - AT HOME!

Couldn't have been better :)

Sweet! :D

Not expecting much from tomorrow either, just glad I get to watch it as opposed to all the Saturday games.

Final news:

Hilbert will play at right midfield like I had hoped after all - Farnerud stays on the bench. What this means is that we will have another debutant today - Traesch, who did good in the winter friendlies and gets his first team chance today. Tough game to start but good luck! He is now our 6th VfB II player to get his first professional game this season. Match starts in just over 5 minutes.

Well, so we lost 4-1, score doesn't really reflect the game as we were in with a shot for a large part of the match. But we didn't play well. And we knew Schalke's big strength is standard situations, and apparently we did nothing to train them as they destroyed on all their standards.

The defense was generally not good enough. I felt Delpierre actually played quite well and Traesch did okay for a first game. Meira however made many mistakes and did poorly, I was not impressed, Beck also had a bad day. As for Schaefer, well what can I say? He is such a terrible keeper, I now don't even feel bad being so blunt about it. Didn't stop anything, looked nervous throughout, and made an enormous mistake on one goal. I don't care if Ullreich is 18, I don't want Schaefer playing for us anymore! Horrible!

There were some positives to take from midfield, Basturk is now fit and slowly progressing, didn't have enough of an impact today but he will do in the future if he keeps his fitness. Hilbert was good but had to go off because he was one foul away from a red card. Khedira, Hitzlsperger and da Silva(who played second half) were all ok, though not great. da Silva's goal however was very nice.

In attack, Marica played well the first half. In the second half, he was completely invisible. Don't remember him touching the ball. Gomez didn't have a good game.

What can I say really? I'm very dissappointed, but in the coming weeks we'll be having quite a lot of doable matches, and we just have to look forward to these games and try and build on the 6 point gap between the intertoto spot and our spot.

Saw something like this coming after that second half against Bremen II.

I still stand by what I said about Bastürk before you guys signed him.

Good signing, but not at what you guys are paying him. In his best days he wasn't worth that much and he sure as hell isn't now.

Very true, your main point of Veh and Heldt overrating him was actually proven
very quickly when they started comparing him with VdV and Diego.

I'm not as in love with Heldt's transfer policies of late anyway.

Lauth was not a good loan last season, Marica has been alright but not worth his price tag yet. He has talent though, so we'll see. Schaefer has been a total misbuy imo, Gledson was a joke purchase - we didn't even paly him once, Ewerthon was a failed loan. Basturk we'll see, he's still got a lot of work to do to make up for the first half of the season. Radu we'll see, in friendlies this winter I wasn't convinced. We'll have to see what he does in the games that count if he gets any chances...

USA.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (February 7, 2007) — The U.S. Men’s National Team shutout Mexico for the eighth straight time with a familiar 2-0 scoreline in front of a sold out crowd of 62,462 Wednesday evening at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. The shutout kept Mexico scoreless on American soil in this decade, as the U.S. has outscored their CONCACAF rivals 13-0 since 2000.http://ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_281684.html

Report on our player's international performances:

Hitz and Super Mario both showed yesterterday once again that they belong in Germany's first 11. The Hammer scored the first goal in the game against Austria, Gomez got thirty minutes and promptly scored the last goal in Germany's 3-0 win. Hilbert's place in the NT isn't guaranteed yet, but he did get to play the last 20 minutes of the match. Lehmann played in goal and did very poorly despite not letting any goals in. Our hero Timo has been on great form for Valencia in the last few games, and me thinkgs he deserves the starting spot as GK :)

Meira played the second half in Portugal's 3-1 loss to World Champions Italy.

Basturk played the first half in Turkey's 0-0 draw to Sweden.

Romania lost dissappointingly 1-0 to Israel. Marica played the first half.

Switzerland lost 2-1 to England, but Magnin wasn't in the side due to his recent injury.

Mexico drew 2-2 with USA, Pardo playing the entire match. Osorio was selected but declined due to his recent injury.

Taking a look at the game ahead of us this weekend, at home to Hertha BSC, we need the three points badly so as not to fall even further behind the teams we are chasing. Hertha were probably the worst performing team of the first round of the Rueckrunde, losing 3-0 AT HOME to Eintracht Frankfurt. So they look very unsteady, and I hope for/expect us to beat them at home. A lot of our injury and suspension problems are looking to be over, so here's how I think we'll play:

----------------Schaefer
Beck------Meira-------Delpierre----Magnin
----------------Khedira
----Hilbert----------------Hitzlsperger
---------------Basturk
--------Gomez---------Marica

In defense, i'd like to see Ullreich start in goal as i'm pretty fed up with Schaefer by now, but I don't see Veh taking the risk so it'll prolly be Schaefer in goal again. Magnin, after getting 30 minutes against Schalke, should be able to start this one. Traesch had a solid Bundesliga debut, but he's really one for the future and I don't see him challenging Magnin/Boka in LB quite yet. Boka of course is still with Ivory Coast at the nations cup so he won't be back for this game.

In midfield, Pardo is no longer suspended, but having played a full 90 minutes for his country against USA, and only arriving back late Friday night, we shouldn't expect him to play on Saturday. Khedira should be the defensive midfield starter. The other positions seem pretty clear: Hilbert, Hitzlsperger and Basturk

In attack, it looks like Cacau will be fit enough to return to the side, but i'd keep him on the bench for this game and retain the Gomez-Marica lineup. But I think we can expect to see Cacau get some minutes in the second half.

I want Ulreich in goal. I hope that schaefer gets injured for a couple of games so that Ulreich can show that he is better than Schaefer. The same happened with neuer and rost....and Adler and Butt. The olders guys were injured for a while so the younger showed that they were better.

I'm all for replacing Schaefer after abysmal displays recently. I've yet to see Ulreich play, how is he?

With Neuer and Rost, Rost was simply replaced, he wasn't injured, but yeah I get your point and I hope Ullreich gets a chance to show what he can do in the near future, but i'm not too optimistic about it...

I thought Stuttgart made a great move in getting Schaefer. I don't know what the hell is wrong with him this season. Sure, he made the occasional mistake in Nuernberg, but nothing like what he's doing now.

And he has no one to blame but himself. I would not blame Veh if he did not stick with Schaefer.
