Contiguglia re-elected president of U.S. Soccer Federation (http://sports.yahoo.com/m/world/news/20020809/contigugliareelect.html)

Didn't see this anywhere else.

"Contiguglia also said he intends to re-sign U.S. men's national team coach Bruce Arena in the next 30 days."

I'm kinda surprised they didn't announce BA's resigning at the meeting. Seems like a done deal at this point.

It has also been announced (I found it on a certain soccer TV website) that Contigulia told Radio Unica that the US will aggressively bid for the 2014 World Cup, as well as the 2007 Women's World Cup. Good news all around.

See interview with Dr. Bob:

On what has to happen to complete deal with Bruce Arena:
“We have to agree to terms.”

Hmmm...does that mean just "money?" Or issues of power over all the national team programs, including youth development??

Stay tuned.

I heard that Interview. They had Contigulia and one of the fellas that runs the MLS. Its seems as if they have paid off Radio Unica to start covering U.S footy.

Radio Unica now covers the MLS daily and has an MLS show on Sundays. To me the Interview was nothing more than propaganda to sucker in Latino fans..

v.s., radio unica have a deal with mls, don't they? they can't say, "no we won't cover advertising and propaganda for mls, only soccer scores!"

and mls has to find a way to reach the hispanic audience. this is a step in the right direction.

They do Now. Before they rarely covered the MLS. These past few days they have been anouncing their partnership with MLS to help the league Grow.

they can't say, "no we won't cover advertising and propaganda for mls, only soccer scores!"

It just sounds Fake. Before they hardly covered the league and now they are saying how Important the league is and we have to help it grow. They also have an MLS correspondent..

and mls has to find a way to reach the hispanic audience. this is a step in the right direction.

The other two Radio Stations in L.A that have football shows, Futbol de Primera with Andres Cantor covers U.S Football and La Radio que Habla 1020 with Veloz does pbp of Galaxy games.

The thing is Futbol de Primera is mostly South American audience. La Radio que habla has predominantly Central American audience and finally Radio Unicas program with Jorge Ramos is mostly Mexican and South American audience...

The key target here is the Mexican demographic. They are targeting the largest Hispanic ethnic group becuase lets face it Mexicans are the majority and the football ratings go where they go..

VS,

I thought you'd be happy that US Soccer recognized the importance of the Hispanic market enough to make the Radio Unica deal. I mean, this is essentially them saying, "We need a larger Spanish-speaking presence to get the word out"--admitting what you've always maintained. Hasn't that been one of your complaints, that MLS and US Soccer don't pay enough attention to Latinos?

Unless you feel threatened that MLS may actually make substantial inroads with La Raza...:)

I said that the USSF/MLS doesnt pay attention to Latinos as players. We are only seen as a great fan base potential.

Unless you feel threatened that MLS may actually make substantial inroads with La Raza...

I have nothing to be threaten about.

I'm sure it never entered into your brain that Radio Unica is acknowledging a market that actually exists.

Fake? Suckering? Your prejudice is shining through.

I'm still not convinced Dr Bob is the right man for this job. I don't know who is - but I am not sure there isn't someone who could do a better job of pulling together soccer in this country.

He seems over his head with this. I am not as anti-Bob as Grahame Jones (link below), but hell, the USSF can be run a lot smarter than it has been:

You will have to register.

Do any of you listen to Radio Unica or to any Spanish football radio showsin L.A ???

If so then you would know that Futbol De Primera is the station that genuinely covers U.S football and Radio que Habla has been covering the MLS since the Longest.

All of a sudden Radio Unica (with its huge Mexican audience) is getting Interviews by Contigulia and Co and has MLS sunday show and will do pbp for the MLS Cup. They are not giving the fans what they want cos no ever calls talking about MLS or US footy.

Im just pissed cos Radio Unica sold Out. Those greedy bastards. Everyone and their mothers Knows that Radio Unica is the best station in L.A to cover the MFL, if you want to hear about MLS you tune in to the other two stations.

turn on tha radio,
nah f''ck it
Turn it off

i feel you VS.

IMHO, MLS just wasted thier money and Radio Unica was smart to take the deal.

Radio Unica has loyal fans... and most of them are Mexican. Ramos and Company hardly ever covered MLS before.... and now they talk about it like its the next best thing....

That cool... Ramos and Company are doing what they got paid for ....but eventually that ones who buys it is the audience. And guess what....
The audience does not buy it or else they would have been talking about the MLS a lot longer.

MLS is shooting their foot. They need to forget about the Mexican and convert Joe Smith into a soccer player. But one nationally televised game per week is not going to do it

Just my 2 cents...

Contigulia has done a good job. There will be more surprises coming his way in future years.

American soccer hasn't reached yet the Promised Land, but is moving toward it day by day...

For once I am in total agreement with the two Panchos above....Mexicans that follow their respective clubs and the MFL are not WILLING to follow MLS. Its not that they hate MLS its just thats how futbol culture goes around the world. Argentines don't follow Brasileno clubs and vice versa. Italian men could care less about the EPL.
If Dr. Bob had one iota of a clue in how to grow U.S. association football in this nation where there is especially high immigrant populations, DROP going after hispanohablantes from CONCACAF and go for South Americans that have moved to stay and not float back after a few years here or the massive influx of Arab, African and Asias that love their footie and have not outlet for the alegria!

Marketing to the Mexicans is useless. Central Americans, South Americans and all the other ethnic groups(including Joe Six Pack) is the way to go. Most chicanos like thug basketball(even though most won't reach 6' with a pair of 4 inch platform shoes) or football and want to be black, so they're pretty much a non-factor on the U.S. footy scene.

Of course Dr. Bob is a puppet for all the amateur associations(of which USSF has basically no control over) so I wouldn't say that he's the best person available. He'll do for the interim until USSF becomes more professional.
