Hi people,
I need a bit of help guys....
Can anybody tell me a bit about the Brazilian State Championships?
How many are there?
Does every state in Brazil have a championships?
How do they work? What is the format? Is it a knock out or league championship?

All states have their own championship and not all of them follow the same format.
For example, in Rio, 12 teams are divided up in 2 groups of four. Each teams plays a team in their group once and the top 2 teams in each group goes into a playoff. Whoever wins, is the champion of the 1st round. For the next phase, you face each team from the other group. The top 2 teams of each group goes to the playoff. Whoever wins is the champion of the second face faces the champion of the first phase for the state championship. If it is the same team, that team is the champion.
In São Paulo, they use a league format where there is 20 teams and each teams plays all of the teams once. The top 4 teams goes to a playoff to crown the champion.

correct.
2008 Rio will have 16 teams in 2 groups of 8.
The Rio and Sao Paulo are the most competitive with 4 major teams each.
But as far as quality of the small teams, Sao Paulo for quite some time has been much more competitive.

quite some magic to have 12 teams in 2 groups of FOUR... two groups of four are 8 team at total.
to the creator of the thread:
State Leagues vary in shape and size. Some states have only one division. Rio Grande do Sul state has 2 divisions, each one with about 16 teams if I am not mistaken. São Paulo state has 3 divisions in its state league, each one with over 20 teams.
The state leagues qualification gives teams SPOTS AT THE BRAZIL CUP. But the Brazilian League is independent of state leagues. Of course, usually the top teams in the brazilian league also are the top teams in their respective state leagues.
But top teams in smaller state leagues most times play in the 2nd or 3rd division of the national league.
Relegation in the state league does not influence a club´s position in the national league, nor vice-versa.
Check Out the clubs in the Rio Grande do Sul state league (they are all pro clubs of course).
-In BLUE, the clubs that play the Brazilian National League First Division (btw, Juventude just got relegated to 2nd division in the national league)
- some clubs play the C division... Caxias and Brasil de Pelotas I think. In 2007, no club from the Rio Grande do Sul league played the brazilian Serie B.
