Seattle defeats the Thunder (again) 1-0.

Now, do they get to host the Earthquakes again in the Open Cup?

Last year they sold out a 3000 seat stadium in hours. This year they have Seahawks Stadium. It just so happens the Man U - Celtic game will play there ON REAL GRASS about 10 days earlier. Wouldn't it be great if they kept the grass for this game?

I can see Seattle fans coming out big for this game. A match against an MLS side that really means something.

Word on the Seattle Soccer mailing list is no.

Interbay only holds 1000. They sold an extra 500 standing seats for that one.

Seattle "fans" won't come out for anything but national team matches and Manchester United. Many complained about crap Memorial Stadium. Now there's Seahawk Stadium and they're still not coming.

Hold your horses, YTFC. According to the USSoccer webshite.

"The Seattle win sets up an Open Cup showdown with the San Jose Earthquakes for the second-straight year. That fourth round game will be played Aug. 5 in Seattle. "

But a few lines later we also see:
Seattle Sounders (A-League) at San Jose Earthquakes - TBD - Aug. 6/TBD

So who knows???

And from the Sounders news release:

"Due to prior scheduling conflicts in Seattle venues, the 4th round of the Open Cup is currently scheduled to take place in San Jose on August 5th. However, the Sounders front office is busily working to bring the game to Seattle and should know the results of their efforts in the next few days."

Keep those fingers crossed.

Definitely. Last year's match at Interbay was a cracker.

I would assume that the match would have to be on grass.

It would be nice to have it at UW. I believe it has a greater capacity and certainly better parking than Interbay. Also some tailgating opportunities without being hassled by "the man."

The Quakes probably want a $50 ransom for not having to open Spartan :p

The game will be in Seattle. There was a mistake.

The problem with playing at Interbay or the UW would be tossing out the window the chance of getting a good sized crowd. I've been optimistic that a rematch against SJ in Seahawks Stadium, with a game that actually counts, would make that exhibition earlier in the season look insignificant.

Also, since the FieldTurf is FIFA approved, and a better surface than what some MLS teams currently play on, I hold out hope that playing in SS would be fine if the team can find a date. I'm also hoping they might move the game back to the second week of August, when I'll be back in town.:D

There's a Metallica/Linkin Park concert at the Hawk on the 8th. Don't know how long they have it reserved before then to get the stage set up, et al, but maybe this has something to do with it??

Is there ANY way they could keep the grass being used for the 7/22 Man U - Celtic game on Tuesday for an extra two weeks? The Sounders have home game Saturday 7/26 anyway.

Other than the MLS All Star Game, San Jose has a match on 7/26 with a break until 8/8, so how about if we play the Open Cup game on Tuesday Aug. 5. The only one potenially tired will be Landon ;-)

The concert should be fine. I believe they set up in 48 hrs. or less and they could set the concert seating on top of the grass which would save potential wear and burns on Holmgren's precious field turf.

Rats!!

If they played at Seahawk Stadium, I bet they could get at least twice as many fans as the UW soccer stands will hold.

They had 3250 show up for an exhibition with the Quakes in late May.

Oh well. Go Sounders! Make it to the next round!

3250 plus a good 2 or 3 thousand others that were conveniently not counted somehow...

Someone posted on another board that the Sounders were looking into getting UW's permission to put some additional temporary seating in place. Failing that, I'm sure they would sell standing room tickets if nothing else...
