I know this is a very obvious question but why are Newcastle known as the Toon?

Thanks.

It's Geordie-speak for 'town', I do believe.

Thankfully Tigerdave got here first as my typically surly "Google it, and you're fired if the answer is on the first page of links" reply to a question would have prevailed...

fortunately there is not an answer until you dig deep in the googleing around page 5 or so; or buried in #2 linked wikipedia article...which states, according to linked geordies.co.uk: "The name Toon originates from the geordie pronunciation of town."

and no it wasn't a stupid question...

aren't the internets fun and informative?:)

Thanks all. I usually search out answers on my own but it's sometimes interesting to throw questions out to forums like this. You occasionally get quite unusual answers and/or spark some good discussion. Anyway, thanks!

We were trying to come up with a name for our U-8 team this year, and I wanted it to be something NUFC related, unfortunately a Magpie is not a very intimidating name for a 7 year old. So I offered Toon Army, thinking they would like the "Army" bit. 1 kid asked me what a "Toon" was and I gave him the run down. The team just kind of looked at me with diappointment, and one kid pipped up and said that was a stupid name to be called a Town Army.

So they voted and became the Red Fire Wolves. Apparently at the 7 year old level your name has to have a color, some destructive force (i.e. fire, thunder, hurricane, lightning bolt), and an animal, other than a Magpie.

That actually fits their playing style better.

I think I am going to steal this name for all of my Fantasy sports teams.

you pronounce that "Thuper Thpirit Thquad" yeah?

And while we are ludicrously renaming Conchobar's team, I recommend:

"The Pink Flaming Spider Monkeys".

"Black Flying Ninjas"

"Gold Hurricane Pirates"

I like to get blitzed at punk shows and start chanting TOON TOON BLACK AND WHITE ARMY.

Sometimes I throw in the ol' OI OI SAVALOY!

Your signature is broken, in case you didn't know. The link in it is broken as well.

Okay, well, um.

I joined BigSoccer in 2003.

You joined in 2007.

Not that this matters in any sort of rank or pecking order...

But you don't get the joke.

Once upon a time, the signature worked.

Then BigSoccer goofed it all up.

And the thread to which the link was attached was deleted by the wonderful Mods.

So I'll quickly explain my sig:

I demand 4 years of my life back = Opposition to the FMF's selection of Ricardo Antonio Lavolpe as coach.

P.S. Toon blabble = A reference to Mel_B, my long, lost comrade. Typical Mel_Bism. Haway the lads. NUFC 14 - West Ham 0.

Broken link = a huge banner displayed prominently on BigSoccer's homepage during the run-up to the 2006 World Cup. It was a counter ticking away the days, minutes, seconds until the U.S. attacked. Matchday 1 came and went. Czech Republic 3 - U.S.A. 0. Milk!, BigSoccer Mexico Field Sargeant, suggested the counter be reset.

Hope this explains the otherwise obvious hilarity of my sig.

Yours,
Hugo Sanchez - King of BigSoccer Mexico.
