being relatively new (and highly addicted) to the world of soccer and its players i like seeing peoples lists of "best" players but I do not read much about keepers...please throw me your top 5's with some reasoning...much appreciated...

Gianluigi Buffon, Franchesco Toldo - Italy
Oscar Cordoba - Columbia
Oliver Kahn - Germany
Brad Friedel - USA
etc etc etc... there are many great keepers out there but those are some of the ones that stand out in my mind as being elite goalkeepers.
I heard that the Hungarian keeper was very good too, but I forgot his name...

If you are talking about a recent torurnament, I'd go with the experts:
WC '02= Rustu Recber

i gotta say buffon has looked pretty good and is at the top of my list. Im not being bais or anything but i think that his performance in the CL final speaks for its self.

I thought he was from Arg.? Also is he the guy that never played soccer before, started real late in his life?

Lev Yashin: the granddaddy of 'em all.
Kasey Keller: I'm still striving to be like him!
Peter Schmeichel: another one of my boyhood idols.
Edwin van der Sar: see above
Tony Meola: played for the defunct Buffalo Blizzards

yes, he is argentinean, I meant he played in WC '90 and I agree with EG, he used to be a good pk stopper, not an outstanding keeper as a whole. as for his beginnings I dont know

Kahn
Casillas
Toldo
Buffon
Rustu
Schmeichel would definitely be on this list in his prime but he's gettin' up there.
