According to Mark Bushman, it does...

http://onthesidelines.org/hindsight071503.htm

It's the final point in his column.

I'll take the intitiative in explaining this one since I'm a big Stones fan. In 1969, the Rolling Stones held a free concert in San Francisco, trying to make it similar to Woodstock. They didn't want the police there, so they hired the Hell's Angels to do security...bad move, as the Angels got wasted and beat up dozens of people, and even killed a few...a very bad scene.

I just modified the link above. The general policy on this board is that when posting links to articles on other websites you should post directly to the article – not just to the main page of the website. The reason for this is in the FAQ but suffice it to say linking directly to articles cuts down on the number of times the mods get emails complaining about spam.

Sorry about that. Thanks, Knave!

Altamont - post Woodstock Rolling Stones concert in which they were trying to cash in on the "Summer Of Love" hippie dollar. They chose the Hell's Angels as security because they were cheap. Unfortunately, it got out of hand because the Hell's Angels, acted like, well, Hell's Angels, and started beating up some of the hippies who came to the concert. For the most part, Angels didn't like hippies too much.

DCU v El Salvador - a soccer match at RFK in which security will be provided by CSC. While not necessarily the friendliest bunch of folks, it's pretty unlikely that CSC will start beating soccer fans to death, no matter how much the CSC don't like soccer.

The comparison is silly. Most people who don't like the El Salvadorans will stay home. That's fine by me. I'll be there taking pictures.

I can see Santino now...

His long flowing hair matted to his sweaty head...

"Everybody just cool out"

This should be the theme song for the match. I for one will be singing it just to piss the sallies off regardless of how valuable RDA was to us. Qunitanila ain't worth shiite.

Mike, I meant it as a half-hearted joke. Sorry if it didn't come across that way. My point had nothing to do w/ CSC, but rather the bad blood between the United fans and the Sallies.

Believe it or not, I did my senior thesis on the Altamont debacle, and there's a lot more to it than your 1 paragraph description.

"Now will you jus' cool out, brother?" ;)

Man this is pretty tiring. The past two matches at RFK--US vs. El Salvador and DCU vs. CD Aquilia were not dangerous--at least from the crowd--in any way shape or form. There was some minor beer throwing incidents and the unfortunate incident with Owen, but there was no out of control incidents or anything that is remotely like altamont.

at best this is the case of poor journalist trying to grab attention; at worst, someone trying to stir up trouble and create a poor atmosphere.

"....Use what remaining playing time you have left and use it to mentor the many young teammates you have. One of the reasons players like DaMarcus Beasley, Josh Wolff, and Ante Razov got so good was because of the time Stoitchkov took to show them how to be a professional soccer player. You can do the same thing. It's got to be better than the situation you're currently in, which you've largely helped to create. You deserve to go out on a better note."

No wonder it's called "My2Cents"....next time I see Etcheverry, I'll be sure to pass along your demands...yeah right.

The season's not over. Yes it's almost assuredly his last year. To be this closed minded and arrogant is just plain wrong.

Stoitchkov isn't that great. Etcheverry isn't that terrible. It was ONE GAME against a depleted Chicago team.

Geez, tough crowd...

Actually, I wrote an article near the end of last year (when lots of people were screaming for Etch's head) and said DC and MLS should resign him and treat him w/ a liitle more respect.

You won't find many bigger Etcheverry fans than me, dude. He's a wonderful player, and from being around the guy over the past few years, I think he'll be a great coach and/or manager. Unfortunately, the things I've seen and heard this year are leading me to believe this might not have a happy ending. I'll be happy to admit it if I'm wrong.

Wouldn't be here if it wasn't.

Well then.........have to wonder what happened!

Fair enough. Enjoy your articles-you speak your mind-the one last week was great-looking forward to the next one.

I just found writing Etcheverry off and Stoitchkov on a little bit much-Stoitchkov was emotional playing against Chicago, and Etcheverry is the kind of player that should come back strong from adversity. So this one I'd say is worth 2 cents-BUT-most posters would agree w/you Etcheverry's FINISHED.

We shall see......

United coach Ray Hudson on the local fans: "They know their game. You can't con them. This is not North Carolina or some mom and
pop outfit. These are hardened fans; knowledgeable championship fans. So
you've got to sharpen your knives in front of them. And we will."

Oh yeah.

Thanks to the incredible journalists we have. Don't get enough credit, nor enough bashing. ;)

If I remember correctly the Hell's Angels were paid in cases of beer. I was at Woodstock not Altamont, so my memory could be a little off (or at least I think I was).

If this is true, I want to security for this match (I will wear my yellow Brazil jersey).

Over the loudspeakers I will be playing: Sympathy for El Diablo.

i read something about it recently and cases of beer and cash were the payment terms. this report also said that at one point jagger could have stopped it but didn't.

i am sure the Barra would be happy to work security for United matches in exchange for cases of beer. I could arrange that.
