Coming to kick your groots!

Congratulations Scots.

For so long a pitiful, hapless and downright embarrassing motley
crew of clowns; only to turn the tables on your persecutors by
scraping a few good results with defensive, ultra-negative and
technically inept but brave and spirited performances.

Of course, some snide disparagers may argue that the only
reason Celtic beat Milan was because the classy Milanese
did not want to seriously compete in the lashing rain on
a cold night in a dystopian Glaswegian hovel against
minnows from a Mickey Mouse league for fear of
getting injured and thus being made unavailable
for future matches against serious opponents in
the knockout stages; and those selfsame critics
may opine that the only reason Scotland are
currently atop their Euro 2008 group is because
of a couple of flukey wins against the considerably
more talented and vastly more attractive soccer
nation of France; but to them we can only, in
fierce unified opposition, cry 'Hogwash!'.

Hopefully not.

The thought of sitting down next Summer to watch elegant
artists such as Henry, Pirlo, Nesta and Ribery, only to be
confronted with the startling realisation that at least two
of the four are sitting at home; with the only form of
'entertainment' provided by growling, hideous
workhorse Scots such as Lee McCulloch and
Gary Caldwell in their stead, just doesn't bear
consideration.

Although I'd like to see Scotland qualify, I do not wish
them to achieve qualification at the expense of teams
that can actually play football; better they gain
the upper hand on their fellow minnows, such as
Belgium, Bosnia, Norway etc.

Thankfully, there is little doubt that they will finish third-
the Ukraine and Italy will take them to school-and thus
the championships will not be downgraded with
their presence.

If Scotland qualify then they will have done so on merit. It's not about who you want to see at a tournament, it's about who has earned the right to be there through results on the pitch.

Of course Lanman.

However, if Scotland are there then it will
be a big disappointment for lovers of the
beautiful game; not to fear, I'm sure the
Georgians, Ukrainians and naturally, the
mighty Italians will have them chasing
shadows in the upcoming, remaining
fixtures.

P.S. Sadly, Rangers and Celtic will probably
finish third in their respective CL groups
and Scottish football will once again be
condemned to the abyss of sporting
insignificance. Let's hope not. :(

Yes, in the last Euros the Italians and French really redefined the term "beautiful football" . Good thing the Scots weren't there to ruin all the exciting, wide-open play we witnessed, especially in the France - Greece match. Afterall, everyone knows that catenaccio means "door-bolt" in Scottish.

Yes, France v Greece was dire, wasn't it?

Because all Greece did was park the bus, which is
...wait for it...exactly what Scotland did at the
Stade De France!

Looking forward to a Greece v Scotland matchup
next year are we, Bocafan? I know I am.

Catenaccio? Sigh...the mandatory cheapshot
of insecure Italy-bashers everywhere makes
an appearence again.

P.S. The Scots don't have a language.

What's wrong with playing a tactically sound game when you know you're inferior to your opponent physically? The game should be 70% brain, 20% heart, and 10% brawn. It is beauty in the eye of the beholder. ;)

I would like to see Italy and France qualify for the possibility to meet again in the Euro, but if Scotland makes it through playing a defensive game, they deserved to be there.

Exactly. Long live the superior Italians and French.

Do the feet come into play at any point?

Yes, they do. I am not anti-Scotland, just anti-terrible footballers.

The usual pathetic sniping from Viola Star, who is clearly bricking it in regard to Italy's Euro 2008 participation. If Scotland have been playing defensive shite then why do we currently sit top of the table having scored the most goals? We could qualify, we might not. Either way we have had a very good campaign in the hardest group and proved a lot of people wrong. Had Shevchenko not been a diving, cheating bastard then we would have even more points. Hopefully we get the points we deserve from Ukraine at the weeked but our squad has been hit with numerous injuries, so I've no idea who will even start.

I still think Italy and France will both qualify, but to think Italy adds anything to any tournament from a neutral observer's POV is laughable. At least Scotland adds the underdog/cinderalla aspect and they'll bring loads of fun supporters to Austria or Swisse making it more enjoyable event for the travelling support of other nations.

Once this weekend is over, we will definetly have a clearer picture as to who will qualify, barring a surprise draw in Italy, or an even less likely result in the Faroes, Scotland has the toughest test, if they prevail then it will up for grabs we shall see, I still like to see Scotland thru, of course after the Azzurri...

Credit to the Scots for having this "renaissance". Rangers and Celtic seem to be doing fine and Scotland has been a tough opponent in the qualifiers.

I think that Italy and France will qualify but I want it to be the Azzurri and the Scots. Sure, the Scots aren't playing fancy football but they're competitive at least and they're not snobby like the French players, who enjoy taking cheap shots in the media.

This reminds me Tommy in Trainspotting. "Doesn't it make you proud to be Scottish?" I doubt that Renton will be saying it's shit to be Scottish at the moment.

Scotland will have revenge on their minds. We helped in their non-qualification for the WC...

Maybe you should be be watching something more along the lines of figure skating if you're so hung up on aesthetics. What a pathetic and elitist view you have of the game. I don't know where this attitude comes from either, because the Italian team that won the WC wasn't exactly dazzling in attack now were they? Wasn't their joint leading scorer a defender more along the lines of a 'growling, hideous workhorse' than an elegant artist? And surely you don't consider Iaquinta, Gattuso, Perrotta, and Gilardino to be artists as well, do you?

It's not like Scotland is comprised entirely of workmanlike players, either. McFadden is tremendously talented if inconsistent, surely the strike against France would have highlighted that? Maloney is also gifted, and although I'm not too familiar with the rest of the squad, I'm sure there are other players of a similar nature.
