Zwei Vereine standen im Endspiel um den DFB-Pokal des Jahres 1969, deren Namen im deutschen Fußballsport besonderen Klang haben: FC Bayern München und FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04

Bayern München hatte gerade der stolzen Liste seiner Erfolge einen neuen Triumph angefügt: die deutsche Fußballmeisterschaft 1969. Jetzt strebten die Bayern nach ihrem dritten Pokalsieg in vier Jahren, der zugleich mit dem doppelten Erfolg in Meisterschaft und Pokal eine Leistung bedeutete, die in der bisherigen Geschichte des Deutschen Fußball-Bundes erst einem Klub geland - dem Endspielgegner Schalke 04 im Jahre 1937.

Auf der anderen Seite stand Schalke 04, der siebenmalige deutsche Meister und Pokalsieger des Jahres 1937. Die Mannschaft wollte an die große Tradition ihrer berühmten Vorgänger anknüpfen, und eine glänzende Steigerung in der zweiten Hälfte der eben beendeten Bundesligasaison war ganz dazu angetan, den Ehrgeiz zu stärken.
