Maybe the '98 squad. They didn't win the MLS Cup, but they won the Concacaf Champions Cup, and the InterAmerican Cup.
Your guess is as good as mine.

1998 was the most talented.

1997 they had it all covered and earned the CONCACAF and Interamerican Cup berths for the 1998 team.

Anyway, I'd say our best XI ever at one time was the XI we ran out there against Vasco in Ft. Lauderdale on December 5, 1998:
Moreno, Lassiter, Etcheverry, Olsen, Sanneh, Williams, Harkes, Pope, Llamosa, Agoos, Garlick.

God that lineup was sweet.

The 1998 team was loaded and the last before the first stage of dismantling. So they didn't win the MLS Cup, big deal. We got some international hardware.
And the win in Ft. Lauderdale was the pinacle.

Actually, if you look at the way the team played in most of 1998, that was the most exciting MLS team ever, in my opinion. As Lowecifer says, they played that sexy football. It's hard to judge, what with the league improving dramatically over 1999 to 2001 (development is stagnant now...). However, I'd say that with a healthy Etch and Moreno, a young and highly motivated Lassiter, the burgeoning Sanneh, brilliant young Olsen, and a very pissed off John Harkes you have a hard time finding a better attacking scheme in the history of the league. Add to that one of the most impressive defensive corps and, well, it just makes me wanna stop typing and go straight home to pull out the vids...good times...good times.......................................................................................

Amazing that squad could fit under the MLS cap, even temporarily.

Despite not winning the MLS Cup, the 1998 team was, in my opinion, the best.

I know most people who are not DC United fans would argue that MLS improved dramatically over 1999-2001.
While I do agree that it did improve somewhat, none of the better teams during that period, i.e. Chicago Fire, Kansas City Wizards, San Jose Earthquakes accomplished much internationally.
The one team that did win the Concacaf Champions Cup, i.e. 2000 LA Galaxy, did not win MLS Cup.

That's Arena, and nobody else. Arena knew who to play, and a lot of those players have become the great players that they are because he helped them develop into a confident, cohesive group. It pains me to see and hear Hudson, but at least Arena is being used well as the USMNT coach...
On the note of United winning consistently...wait for Hudson to leave, and a good coach to come. Even so, with all the negative damage from Hudson, it might take a while to get the good players actually playing well and with confidence.

Also the ability to go and discover true gems.
Look a the starting lineup again: Moreno, Lassiter, Etcheverry, Olsen, Sanneh, Williams, Harkes, Pope, Llamosa, Agoos, Garlick.
Moreno was still on his first MLS contract, the one that salvaged him from the EPL.
Olsen was a P-40 rookie.
Pope was more than likely on his initial MLS contract.
Llamosa was an A-League find (and ex-WTC janitor)
Sanneh was another A-League find.
Williams was happy to not eat at a Richmond soup kitchen.
In later years, a good number of these guys commanded MLS max (or close to it). But Payne and Arena found them, and polished them into that.

And don't forget the bench for that year. Kamler, Talley, Wood, Gori, Aunger, and Wegerle. And wasn't Sarachan assistant? What a year '98 was.

98 was easily the best team that we had. Of course we did win the Pan American Cup with th eRoster mentioned above. But also, in my opinion, we were screwed out of a legitimate chance to win the MLS Cup. Didn't we have to play a match 3 days before flying across country to play in the MLS Cup. I know that Chicago didn't. We looked very tired out there.
You play an entire season and it all comes down to one game with two days rest.
Ridiculous.
