Everybody, as corny as this sounds, why don't we create an actual organization here in the states. Something like, "United States Association of Colombian Football Fans" USACF. I am 100% serious and we write a letter to Pinto detailing our beliefs. England wants to cap a Colombian and we're just sitting on our asses not doing anything....acuerdense, el pueblo undio jamas sera vencido!

Schoolboys do academy proud
The most youthful team to represent Charlton's senior academy side this season came within a whisker of upsetting high-flying Chelsea on Saturday morning.

At a drizzly Sparrows Lane, the young Addicks trailed their illustrious visitors midway through the first half and with so many youngsters on show, you felt Chelsea might go on to record a comfortable victory.

But Damian Matthew's side produced a quite breathtaking second-half performance, which was made all the more impressive by the fact that even more schoolboys were on the pitch by that stage.

Under-16 striker Ben Godfrey bagged himself a second goal in as many weeks after his strike at Ipswich last weekend, and that was cue for a period of Charlton dominance that might even have surprised the academy staff.

Much of the home side's better work during a fine spell stemmed from exotically-named schoolboy substitute Steve Lozano-Calderon, whose sharpness and willingness to support the front men caused Chelsea big problems.

He sent a searing drive narrowly over after a mazy dribble, but Charlton came even closer to taking a shock lead when Scott Wagstaff's exceptional left-footed half-volley on the turn rattled the crossbar.

Surviving that and other scares, Chelsea's 83rd-minute winner from s set-play couldn't have been more against the run of play, not to mention heartbreaking for the Addicks camp.

But taking the edge of the disappointment would have been the realisation that the younger players, most of whom are expected to become full-time scholars next season, were not in the slightest bit overawed by the occasion or indeed the standard of football.

Matthew named no fewer than five schoolboys in his starting line-up and that number swelled to seven in the second half.

Up against a multicultural Chelsea outfit, a large percentage of which were reportedly cash signings, it was a very encouraging display indeed.

Chelsea made the stronger start and on 13 minutes Danish striker Morten Nielsen struck the join of Joe Woolley's bar and post after a fine through ball from Carl Magney, and the lead arrived, pretty inevitably, on 23 minutes.

Another intelligent run from Nielsen in behind the Charlton defence was expertly picked out by Shaun Cummings, and Woolley's reaction save flew straight at the shins of the recovering Chris Solly who couldn't help but put the ball into his own goal.

There was instant atonement for the England schoolboy, however, as seconds later Nielsen had clipped a ball past the advancing Woolley, only to see Solly emerge from out of the clouds to miraculously slide the ball off the line.

It wasn't until the half-hour mark that Charlton manufactured their first opening, and it might have resulted in a red card for Chelsea keeper Rhys Taylor.

Jonathan Kurrant fed Donovan Simmonds and when the striker was hauled down by Taylor after skipping past him on the edge of the box, you felt a red card might be brandished.

The stopper escaped with a yellow though, and Charlton had very little to show for the incident when Chris Saunders, who it was a pleasure to see back in the starting line-up after his injury nightmare, curled the resulting free-kick wide.

That was the way it stayed until the break, and whatever Matthew had to say in the dressing room certainly done the trick.

On the hour Simmonds flashed an effort inches wide of the far post following some classy play from Scott Wagstaff and then Godfrey narrowly missed the target after clever work from Lozano-Calderon.

Charlton sensed that they becoming an increasing force in the game and the leveller arrived on 77 minutes.

Simmonds did superbly to flick a cross from the left into the path of his supporting players and when the ball ricocheted off a defender and dropped to Godfrey, the youngster showed good concentration to keep the ball down and drive it home.

From looking like a side holding on to some degree, Charlton suddenly realised they were very much in the ascendancy, and Wagstaff was inches away from wrapping up the goal of the season competition when his fabulous shot on the turn came back off the bar.

Lozano-Calderon's left-footed hammer then whistled over the top but then, seven minutes from time, Magney, Chelsea's current Football Icon, was left unmarked at the near post to head home Miroslav Stoch's corner.

Charlton: Woolley, Solly, Clark, Saunders (Kissi 68), Sinfield, Thomas, O'Shea (Lozano-Calderon 58), Kurrant (Stavrinou 51), Simmonds, Godfrey, Wagstaff.

Subs (not used): Nielsen, Harkin.

Goal: Godfrey 77

Date: Sat 20 Oct 2007. Gary Haines reports Charlton U18s 1 West Ham United U18s 0
A fine piece of individual skill from Danny Uchechi helped Charlton U18s claim the derby honours against West Ham United at Sparrows Lane on Saturday.

The striker struck home the decisive goal in the second half as the Addicks negated the threat of the free-scoring Hammers.

Uchechi cut in from the left-hand side, and jinked into the box before producing a deft finish past the visiting keeper to earn Charlton maximum points.

Matthew had sent a strong side into action, and it included England U16 debut scorer Jonjo Shelvey in midfield alongside Rashid Yussuff.

And it was the home backline that earned special praise from the head coach for some defensive defiance against a prolific Hammers forward unit.

Skipper Rhys Coleman made a welcome return after a foot injury and played his part, alongside Sam Long, Jack Clark and Taylor Sinfield.

Steve Lozano-Calderon was also a menace out wide, and with a bedrock to build on it was in-form striker Uchechi who won the day after the break.

Charlton: Woolley; Long, Clark, Sinfield, Coleman; Harkin (Godfrey 75), Shelvey, Yussuff, Lozano-Calderon (O'Shea 60); Wagstaff, Uchechi.

Subs (not used): Lee, Jenkinson, Rygaard-Jensen
