It's been driving me nuts all weekend and I've gotten nowt from Google or IMDB with my generic plot summaries.

The movie is from the 80s (it was on cable a bunch back then). It's almost certainly British.

The plot: an SAS solider (though he might not have specifically been identified as "SAS") oversteps his bounds on a training mission and is drummed out of the service. We later find out this is all a set up to get him on the inside of some terrorist group. I can't recall the nationality or agenda of the group, though it might've been pan national (IRA/Red Brigade/etc).

The terrorists take over an embassy (American?), at least I think it's an embassy, and some other smaller private residence (maybe the soldier's family's home?). He's on the inside of the embassy and somehow signals or makes the police on the outside aware that he's on the inside and I believe he saves the day at the end.

In what I recall was a really cool action/adventure/spy movie scene, a commando/swat unit is in a house adjacent (attached) to the small house where some hostages (the family?) are being held. They remove the bricks one by one and eventually blast through, kill the two terrorists there (a man and a woman) but save the hostage including some hapless police officer who got captured too.

If this sounds familiar at all, pipe in. I'll guess that it was made somewhere between 1979-1985, though probably early 80s. I'm betting I saw it on HBO.
