Well, iufan, Detlef, AfricanHrbMan, SamLakey, HomeAtHighbury, others, and I have been going on about university demographics and athletic departments in the Geography thread, undermining Rick's efforts to determine who really knows more about where certain places are in the world. I have also been going on about other things, which is really diverting from Rick's central motives. Therefore, I have established this thread, which will provide a forum for anyone to slag others for their choice of university; it will also provide a forum for the general discussion of intercollegiate sporting events and related trash talk.

If you would like to see where we left off, please note the "Related Link."

All right, let's do it!

Edit: Okay, so the "Related Link" did not show up, so please go here: Previous Thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=602027&page=11)

Oh I know one trip isn't enough to assess a whole student body, i was just playing around. It was in 2003 I went. Penn state lost in embrassing fashion if i can remember. Ha! I still remember mocking that key jangling thing you guys do during kickoffs with another buddy of mine right in the midst of the student section. No worries though I was so drunk at that point, If fists were thrown, they would have just harmlessly bounced off of me. Spent the week at my fraternities chapter there, of which was equally unimpressed with lol .

Apparently, AfrcnHrbMan did not see the new thread, and I don't want to clutter it up, so here is the response.

I remember that game. I wasn't there. It was a long weekend, so I was in Florida visiting my grandparents. However, I was at the game in Columbus that year where they went to OT following a blocked kick (unfortunately, I can't remember if it was a FG or a PAT), then Ben Jones missed a FG that would have kept the game going. Ugh. That was a rough year. So much potential, and it ended up 9-4.

Anyway, what frat were you a part of? In all honesty, I got turned off by the frats early on in my time there, so I don't think I went to a frat party in the last three years I was there. I preferred to remain a GDI, and I am still a GDI in life! :D

Oh, crap. That's your bread-and-butter, and you don't even have that? Wow! Well, at least we won't hear about the "greatness" of the association football program anymore, nor will we hear the asinine "Who cares about soccer? (sometimes written 'futbol')" responses from my Boiler brethren.

Now, whenever I see anyone touting the IU program, my response is not of that variety, but more along the lines of "Who cares about association football in the NCAA"? Now, I know that plenty of people do care, and the accomplishments of coach Jerry Yeagley in building that program are nothing to sneeze at, but for all their greatness, where do the players end up? MLS (and, by extension, the old NASL), if they're lucky? The thing is, a lot of these guys have not had professional careers at the highest level. That's how I address it, since I clearly have a place for association football in my sporting landscape.

Okay, so Purdue and IU can not be compared in that regard, since Purdue does not have a men's team (neither do three other Big Ten institutions). However, Purdue and the other three do have women's teams (methinks Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, erm, I mean the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act of 1972 has something to do with that), and the women's team had developed a devoted, passionate student following (I would use the term "cult" here, but that would be inappropriate :D) of which the members call themselves--get this--the "Purdooligans." I respect their efforts, although I don't know if I necessarily agree with the name, as it is clever and corny at the same time.

I can also tell you that a number of the members of the women's team are quite cute. I know I had a few crushes here and there. Yes, I am admitting to crushes at university. Pardon me. :p

Well, that's college soccer for you, though. Anyone who's really good enough should head to Europe early enough that they don't even end up in university at the US.

Even the best IU players in recent years – Drew Moor, Pat Noonan, Jay Nolly, Ned Grabavoy, Jed Zayner, Danny O'Rourke – have only gone on to MLS careers, not European ones (though Grabavoy was close).

Our best player right now, Ofori Sarkodie, plays for the U20s, and has a chance of finding European football. He's a centerback, but undersized -- he'll probably get converted out wide.

We started out the season really well, and were up to #2 in the rankings. We've just lost a few in a row. We really don't suck, I'm just bitter. We'll be in the college cup again at the end of the year for sure.

Such is NCAA soccer though. It's still entertaining, and I love watching IU play the 3-5-2. Soccr is soccer, and it's fun to watch.

Dema Kovalenko had a little time in Europe in between stints with DC and NY. It doesn't hurt that he's Ukrainian.
