Game just ended.....USA embarassed by Brazil 4-0.

I know a lot of Red Bull fans follow the USWNT and will be as shocked as I am.

I think the game was lost when Ryan replaced his starting keeper. I'll never forget the shots of Solo's 'if looks could kill' glare as she sat on the bench. Our gals looked like a field of refridgerators that the Brazilians danced around. Terrible call on Shannon; that was the nail in the coffin. The second yellow was not deserved.

That said, Marta put on an incredible show, and I think we will see a steep decline in press on Abby. She always reminds me a female Horst Hrubesch (there's one to look up: WC'82), while Marta is pure Brazil.

Funny thing is that Brazil looked like crap against Australia, and also lost a day's rest for this game because the Australia game was changed from Saturday to Sunday. But the weather turned out to be South Florida hot and humid and our gals just had stone legs. The better team certainly won this game. I'm just surprised Brazil has so much energy.

Despite all the lame excuses of an own goal, Brazil was putting on the pressure when it happened.

But seeing how inconsistent Brazil can be, I think Germany will take them in OT or pks because Germany will play their consistent game.

Erratic, last-minute roster changes, uninspiring offense, lack of defense...

Ryan could take over for Arena. <-- trust me, I'd be shocked if no one's tried this line yet

Agree 100% with Brownswan & Roehl. Ryan screwed up big time, unsettled the whole squad at the worst possible time.
Remember that he nearly got burned in the very first match with the DPRK, letting them play down one due to injury and repairs to Wambach for how long? The North Koreans scored and the US did well to salvage a draw.
If he lasts long I'll be very surprised.

I think Ryan will stay on until the Olympics, though. In the end, it is the more recognizable tournament than the WWC, at least from a US perspective IMO. Heinrichs took a lot of fire between losing the WWC at home and survived until winning in Athens.

The WNT has to beat Norway, in any case. Two losses in a row and Ryan should be turned away at US Immigration.

Brazil were deserving winners as they were dominant even before the hoax of a red card. Marta is fun to watch.

Ryan, like Arena did last summer, seemed to out-think himself and play to matchups, instead of just preparing his team and putting the best XI on the field. It's amazing how many coaches - good and bad - are capable of making this amateur mistake.

BTW, I volunteer to personally console Hope Solo. All night long if I have to. I have great powers of empathy.

The thread over on the Women's Forum has been pretty vitriolic toward the team and Ryan.

Reminds me WC06 versus the Czechs and Ghana.

The benched goalkeeper speaks. Think she may air her grievances? :D http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3039111&categoryId=2378529&n8pe6c=2

Classless remarks by Solo, throwing her teammate under the bus.

Goalkeeper change had nothing to do with them not getting any decent shots on goal and had nothing to do with the Brazilians just toying with them on the field.

The two Brazilian girls upfront (Marta and Cristienne) made Wambach look like a tall slow plodding forward. This should have been a 9-0 game.

How many of you showed up to watch this same match-up in Giants Stadium in June? ESC had about a dozen people, plus Mary Poppins. The ladies conceded a goal, but outplayed them afterwards & scored twice.
Yesterday was not our day. If there was to be a change in goal, probably needed to be in game 2. Hope ought to keep her own counsel, or speak more diplomatically. Don't destroy team chemistry through public statements.
Beat Norway!!!

I was there in June, and Marta wasn't. I suspect her absence was more relevant than my presence.

1) Solo was a bit OTT in her public comments, but something needed to be said.

2) Seems to me Ryan did a good job of destroying the chemistry before the match.

You would have got beat from the Germans anyway. Your team is too light weight. Its like a team fo DeMarkus Beasly's.
