The more neurotic of you, please keep an eye on this to make sure it's all in order for mistakes and all, please.

The 1st post will be updated after each matchday.

Are you verifying the assists from watching the matches or are you counting on some site? For me, unless the assist really mattered in the goal, I don't believe it should be counted. (For example, Van der Sar passes to Ronaldo, who runs 60 yards and scores. No assist.)

Never by a site. Always by eye.

And always the very last essential touch before the goal. Sadly the visionary long ball that opens up the field and is the basic reason for some goals isn't counted.

A couple of the local Uni's have been trying to put second assists on their box scores when they send them into my work. It drives me insane and I haven't been putting them in when I type the match sums up. I'm going to keep doing it my way till I get told otherwise, then I'll probably go on a rant.

This isn't hockey.

I think 2nd assist ought to be included in any of these sorts of stats, as many times its the second assist which makes the goal. Where there is no meaningful 1st or 2nd assist, then include neither. :)

Bin assists altogether.

Bin assists altogether.

Hey now, that wasn't the question!

That's a bit harsh, btw. Assisters are as important as the goalscorer ain't they? Spoon and the egg and all that.

Just messing around. :p

Ultimately I suppose it comes down to what you're trying to establish from the stats (if anything) or just have something fun to look at.

Carrick will therefore be known as the first and second assistmaster!!!;)

I think 2nd Assister is a good idea... but then again, I also think keeping tab of defence opening passes (even if they don't lead to a goal) - strictly for my knowledge as a fan - is a good idea.

Also, this thread I believe will bring to the forefront one of my reasons for giving Nani a more prominent role. We win lots of corners, he's brilliant at taking them and they've twice been the difference in just 9 matches on the season.

In general, I hate the assist stat. In this case, it appears that DS is using discretion in granting assists and not automatically giving credit to the player who makes the last pass. In the case of the second assist, I don't have a big issue with it as long as it's credited properly.

All that being said, I'd still like to bin assists all together.

Why? Sometimes the assist is actually more important then the goal. Just ask Tevez.

I don't like the stat. It's often given to the player who made the last pass, regardless of whether or not the pass had anything to do with the goal.

So give it when it matters. Corners, passes that break back lines, through passes, crosses, etc.

Exactly. That's why I asked DS if he was giving assists based on watching the matches. I (irrationally, perhaps) trust DS to properly credit assists. Maybe if I have the free time, I'll watch each of United's goals so far this season to see if I agree on the assists. (Now to see if I can free up 30 seconds.)
