...and is it true that Tostao's 'name' was so called after the name of the lowest value Brazilian coin? Just curious!!

Tostão is like a penny. It was the lowest denomination in older Brazilian currency (when it was "Cruzeiro", Tostão was 10 cents). Tostão would be the nickname for the smallest kid.

Grêmio is the same (and short) for Agremiação which is a word used to mean Association, usually Sport Association.

Flamengo comes from Praia do Flamengo, the location of the original Rowing Team. The Beach has this name because there the French tried to invade Rio de Janeiro under the command of Villegagnion who probably was Flemish (Flamengo).

Thanks, guys. Very helpful - which means I will ask other questions from time to time!! One thing I did pick up while in Rio was that Leblon was named after the blond in French or something or other.

How did Botafogo get its name? Was it after a discoverer or something (this one is going to run and run!!). Thanks again.

Botafogo is also named for the Beach. There was also a rowing team in the Praia de Botafogo. Now, Bota-fogo means to burn something, more like to torch something. That I don't know why.

Fluminense comes fro the latin flumen ( a river). Fluminense original Tennis Club is near the mountains (Where Christ The Redeeemer is). That is the origin of the River Carioca, that went down to Praia do Flamengo. So, Fluminense means related to the river (either Rio Carioca or Rio de Janeiro). People from Rio de Janeiro City are called Carioca, from the rest of Rio de Janeiro State are called Fluminense.

Carioca is the name that the Indians gave to original settlers Cari=Stone Oca=House.

Thanks, man. I actually visited Laranjeiras in 1998 and there really can't be many stadiums with such a magnificent backdrop.

Grêmio comemora 20 anos do título mundial

Not even the gremistas could believe it. After 20 straight rounds in the last positions of Brasileirão 2003, Grêmio made a impressive comeback in the lastest games and escaped relegation. There were pitch invasions during the Grêmio 3-0 Corinthians match of the last round of the championship to cellebrate their permanence amongst the elite of Brasileiro.

Gremio celebrate their great escape

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Former South American champions Gremio celebrated with a typical Gaucho-style barbecue on Monday after pulling off one of the greatest escapes in Brazilian championship history.

Gremio, one of the country's proudest clubs, spent nearly half of the competition propping up the table and appeared doomed in early October when they were six points adrift.

Escaping the second division was like winning a title," said captain Roger, who completed a lap of honour with the rest of the team after Sunday's game.

Big Phil, Ronaldinho a distant memory as Gremio go down

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 29 (Reuters) - The trophy-filled days of Luiz Felipe Scolari and the trickery of Ronaldinho were just distant memories for Gremio supporters on Monday as they contemplated life in the Brazilian second division.

Gremio, where the Brazil World Cup-winning coach known as Big Phil was launched on an unsuspecting world during the mid-1990s and where Ronaldinho was raised, were condemned to relegation with three games left after drawing 3-3 with Atletico Paranaense on Sunday.
